"We take input from the music department, but we also select on our own by reading journals and picking out particular compact discs which portray the popular music of our time," he said. "We urge faculty to give us input, but a lot of the time we don't get it because the faculty is underpaid and they don't have time." Kranz, added that compact discs are important for researching modern times. "If you would have collected rock and roll records in the 1950s some people would have called it frivolous. Now people use them for research purposes. "People think compact discs are frivolous, but 10 to 15 years down the line I believe that there will be a big field of study on them from a sociological perspective," Kranz said. "They are sexist, racist, and violent."
