Suppressing these-mewould only move the German government closer to what they are desperately trying to avoid. If the men commit a crime and there is proof of the crime then it becomes an entirely different matter. But the government cannot restrict mere thoughts, especially if the men in question have done nothing in violation of any actual law. The Chronicle feels that defense of civil rights should extend to all factions of society, regardless of how errant or deviant their ideas may be. It is only through assurance of these freedoms that the German government can promote real freedom for all members of its society. SiLy 1M 2r circumstances, the German government should not revoke any citizen's rights. No government should be allowed to revoke civil rights before something is done in violation of them. This is a fairly common and valuable concept in most civilized governments and should not be ignored by the German government. Granted, the argument in favor of suspending these men's rights is persuasive, especially on an emotional level. Violent crimes are on an increase in Germany and something must be done to stop the spread of However, any action the government takes must also be legal. The German government has to realize that the very thing they are trying to avoid is the single-minde- d . n . List. Who knows? Maybe I'll have a few more wishes come true. because we want to buy them a particular gift, but out of obligation. If we didn't buy these people a Christmas gift, we'd feel pretty stupid and they just may be I offended. After all, everybody else is buying each other gifts. J've always Eleni Vatsis wondered, why we jusfcan't buy gifts at any time during the year for whomever we wish. That way we can be sure to give another person a gift we know they'll like and not one we just got at a Christmas sale. Anyway, I think all of this giving stuff is a good idea. Some people need the added incentive to share with their fellow human beings, even if it is out of obligation. I also really like this Santa Claus idea. I think I was the last person in my grade to realize that there really isn't a jolly old man who hangs out with a bunch of deer and keeps a running record of my behavior. My parents still try to keep the myth going, even though I've noticed the handwriting of Mr. and Mrs. Claus looks strangely similar to the handwriting of Mr. and Mrs. Vatsis. Anyway, I'm convinced that there is someone out there who grants wish all the skinheads . and iri neo-Naz- is Utah would move to northern Chronicle Editorial Editor Idaho to join the rest of them. That way they could secede from the Union and we wouldn't have to worry about those hatemongers any more. They could hang out together in their little racist, ethnocentric clans and they wouldn't ever have to see anyone who doesn't meet their strange criteria. It kind of makes me wonder, if there's no one in their - little country to hate, what will they do with all of their spare time? Think of ways to hate each other, plenty of mine granted in the past, usually unexpectedly. So, I hope that whoever it is out Hopefully, the university community can find it in their hearts to forgive Associate Editor Steve Miller for his comments about Iranians. He may have come off sounding like a racist, but he really meant to plead for the Iranian government to call off the bounty on Salman Rushdie, not offend everyone of Iranian descent. The letters and phone calls we received at the Chronicle office have also given me hope. Our readers have shown that they will not tolerate racism of any kind and I think that's a step in the right direction. I wish Sen. Bob Packwood, (R) Oregon, would cancel his membership to Club Girls Girls maybe? Girls. hope the American military is able to help the Somalis gain stability for their country, or at least make sure food is distributed. I hope not one more child has to die because rival clans are too busy fighting to care about feeding them. 1 wish someone would take that bozo Rush Limbaugh off the air. This guy, who looks like a cross I wish Bill Clinton could keep all of the promises he made during his campaign. I hope he was sincere I people wishes? I know I've had between General Schwartzkopf and Willard Scott, does nothing on his program but promote his book and newsletter. I expected to be offended by his commentary, maybe have a laugh or two, but after watching the show for about 10 minutes, I changed the channel to see what was on Oprah. about creating jobs and reducing homelessness and giving students some incentive to graduate without fearing that they won't be able to find employment in their field. I really , hope he can solve the health see "Vatsis" page eight Also, the Chronicle would like to thank downtown merchants for offering free parking in front of their businesses. Not pnly is it an intelligent business move attracting untold numbers of shoppers to the area, it's nice to see that someone is foregoing an opportunity for profit to make the holiday season a little more enjoyable. In addition, the Chronicle would like to take this opportunity to wish you a safe and enjoyable December holiday of your choice and a happy new year. Furthermore, the Chronicle calls on Santa Claus to cease the exploitation of elves for capitalistic ' M V gain. Unfortunately, however, when I first asked for a set of files in the Liberal Education office, I was told to look for the information I wanted in the ASUU book. How can publishing an evaluation that is 1.5 points below average on a seven-poiscale be either helpful or fair? I propose taking an average or truly representative sample instead. nt Rick Heinecke graduate student health education The Daily Utah Chronicle Business hours: Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm 581-70- 41 The Chronicle welcomes reader response.
