Show 4 The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Fourteen Friday, February 15, 1991 member flying solo as brilliant director Ex-Pyth- on By Jeffrey D. Jonsson Chronicle Video Critic Perhaps the most enigmatic and unsung member of the Monty Python troupe is Terry Gilliam. Python's only American member, he was also responsible for the fantastic and sometimes absurd animation sequences which made Monty Python so unique. Terry Gilliam, since leaving the Python, has directed three movies, which at times are visionary, and at times absurd. All three are yours to take home for an evening or two of fun. Time Bandits Directed by Terry Gilliam Produced by Terry Gilliam Written by Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam Starring Craig Warnock, David Rappaport, Kenny Baker, Jack Purvis, Sean Connery, Ralph Richardson, David Warner, John Cleese, Michael Palin Warner Home Video boy living in a quiet British suburb who witnesses a knight galloping through his room late one night He lays a trap the next night and into his room pops a gang of noisy little men. The little men led by Randall (Rappaport) capture Kevin, and flee his room through a magic portal when a huge apparition begins to chase them. What begins is Kevin's journey through time with the gang of Bandits who have stolen a map of time doors from the Supreme Being. Different vignettes highlight Gilliam's bizarre directing style. Perhaps the most interesting is when Kevin and the gang fall through a time door into a floating derelict occupied by an ogre and his wife who capture them and intend to eat them. Other places the gang end up are the Titanic, the kingdom of Agamemnon, Napoleon's court, Sherwood Forest and a giant void in which they meet up with ultimate Evil. You'll have to watch it to find out what happens next. Bandits was Gilliam's first solo work, and also the viewing public's first taste of his peculiar style. Gilliam's films are typically dark and dense, and Time Bandits is Time no different. Time Bandits begins with Kevin, a Brazil Directed by Terry Gilliam Produced by Arnon Milchan Written by Terry Gilliam, Charles McKeown, Tom Stoppard Starring Jonathan Pryce, Kathrine Helmond, Kim Greist, Robert DeNiro, Michael Palin, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins, David Warner Warner Home Video Brazil is the film that put the name Terry Gilliam on the tongue of movie critics and film connoisseurs worldwide. This movie is a very intense and, at times, harrowing experience. Jonathan Pryce plays Sam Lowry, civil servant who has no a low-level aspirations of upward movement, straight from the pages of Jules Verne, only in Brazil, it is crowded, dark and dirty. Brazil owes a lot to George Orwell's 1984, but it is also very original in many aspects. Terrorism plays a major role in Brazil's society, Robert DeNiro plays Henry Buttle, a rogue, heating engineer labeled a terrorist by the government. The Bureau of Central Services plays a large role in the world of Brazil as does the Bureau of Information Retrieval. What begins as a comic twist soon becomes theatre of the absurd when two Central Services workers, played by his contributions and fund mi 7 Access Convenient locations Open late and on Saturdays DRIVE UPl the University Credit Union we understand the need for convenience and accessibility. In the yarn the Baron was spinning, he saved the town from a siege by the Turkish army, but when he is finished, the townspeople throw open the gates, and find that the siege has been broken. Gilliam Purvis, Sting RCAColumbia Home Video Baron Munchausen is a legendary shifts back and forth from what European hero whose exploits were much exaggerated, by himself and others. Terry Gilliam has crafted a very intriguing film around the story of a fictitious city besieged by the Turks in the eighteenth century. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is a children's story, and this film has a child-lik- e feel. However, this movie also has many adult sensibilities and is a good movie for both groups. Munchausen is a 'loony' picture. e It takes a character seems to be real to what seems to be story so often, that when it ends, it's not clear what has just happened. Despite ambiguity, Gilliam's films work well in their own milieu. There is an undeniable attraction to the kind of kinetic energy they exhibit. Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen are children's stories with an adult twist, and Brazil is a mature, somber interpretation of a repressive society. All are well worth your time.
