Show I I - Friday. November 16, 1990 The Daily Utah Chronicle - Page Ninteen Sports COOL ROAD SOUNDS Spikers to close season at home must win both matches and have New Mexico lose to Utah and beat By CurroN Schmidt Chronicle Sports Writer BYU. Utah has nothing to lose but a lot to gain this weekend. Confidence and a winning attitude going into next season are a couple of big things to gain. For now though, the Lady Utes like their role as a spoiler and hope they can play it to perfection. "Playing the spoiler role can be a motivator for the team," said head coach Beth Launiere. "The team is excited to play these matches and we are hoping both New Mexico and San Diego State are looking past us O.K. Utah fans. You all know about the big football game on Saturday, but that's not the only show in town this weekend for Ute sport fans. The Lady Ute volleyball team also plays their final swan song of the season as they take on two of the top teams in the Western Athletic Conference. Friday night, the Lady Utes play host to New Mexico while on Saturday night, the Lady Aztecs of San Diego State come for a visit. Both matches will be played in HPER-101 and begin at 7:30 p.m. are out of The Lady Utes the conference race with an 8 WAC record but have the opportunity to play a spoiler. Both New Mexico and San Diego State are in the hunt for the conference title and it all comes down to this weekend's matches. New Mexico is 2 in WAC play and trails conference leader BYU by one game. For the Lady Lobos to win the conference, they must win both matches. If San Diego State, 3 in WAC play, is to take the title, they to BYU." Both teams Utah plays this weekend will be tough to beat. New Mexico and San Diego State defeated the Lady Utes on their home courts in three straight games. Utah played poorly against the Lady Aztecs but came back and gave New Mexico a tough match in front of over 6,000 E (7-1- 9), 0-- Lady Lobo fans. New Mexico is a very strong team and ranked No. 12 in the nation. 6-- Behind the play of Pauline Manser and Maria Gurreri, New Mexico leads the WAC in hitting percentage, kills per game, assists per game, and digs per game. 5-- San Diego State has the conferences top blocker in Jennifer Miller and Grade Schutt, who was the WAC player of the week this past week, is the WAC leader in aces per game. The Lady Aztecs lead the WAC as a team in that category Utah's last home match was their best of the season. They defeated Weber State in three straight games and had some great support from the fans. The Lady Utes have played competitively better at home but Utah wants a little more than that in the last two matches of the season, like a WAC victory. "We are really going out to win these games and not just be competitive. It will be hard though with two great teams coming to play," commented Launiere. Utah will be counting on all of its horses if they are to win one of these matches. Linda "The Terminator" Wilcox, Diggin' Debbie Gibby and the rest of the Lady Utes must play even better than they did against Weber State to pull off an upset. The Lady Utes have played well at home though and with a large and loud crowd on hand to watch, a foul smell could be in the air for the conference leaders. Kenwood KRC 31 0 cassette receiver. ..
