In the case of True Colors, there lurks all the old and storylines that we are all ed to from, escape as new something masquerading and original. In Evening Shade, the strengths of characterization and humor revitalize the ordinary. trying - TRUE COLORS Sunday, FOX, 6PM another family show with a twist. A white woman marries a black man she has a daughter, he has two sons. FOX has advertised this show with the caption: "It ain't The Brady Bunch." No, it definitely ain't. The kids here do not wear bell bottoms, nor do they have hair Yet . resembling uncooked spaghetti (remember Marsha Brady?) and a typical conflict on the show wouldn't be whether or not the family dog should be gotten rid of because he's causing allergies. No, the situations on True Colors aren't quite that mundane, but they come close. On one episode, the major dilemma revolved around Dad's disgust with his son, because he was spending too much time with his new grandmother and her friends. On another one, Mom was worried because she didn't feel her new black sons are comfortable with having a white mom. But all of this isn't anything we haven't seen before. This show tries to hide the fact that it's just another familiar-lookin- area. The interested public is welcome to attend 9 p.m., and participants are invited to begin at 6-- any gallery. Dolores Chase Fine Art at 260 S. 200 West will feature acoustical jazz guitarist Joe Clark, free refreshments, and the regular bevy of artists, including new paintings by Layne Meacham and Jeff Cobabe and still-lif- e monoprints by Moishe Smith. Legendary Utah artist Lee Deffebach's paintings rule the gallery with their presence. Although there were only three hanging, I spent more time looking at them than all the rest combined. "Primitive Rites," a large acrylic executed partially in her squeegee technique echoes of archetypal memories 'past. Layers of penetrating color are accented by presence during composition. Sculptor Evelyn West treats us to six figure sculptures, shaped of wood, foam, plaster, and painted with various acrylic washes. "Faith" is done in her globular style, with one eye covered, and varicolored d weathered looking areas. Tree legs enable the plaster boy to stand. "Burden of Fear," another boy trunk-shape- figure, carries weighty wing-lik- e structures over his head, with blue, green, orange, and red washes over the boy's terror stricken face. The texture and antique coloring of "I see but am I seen?" is gratifying texturally as it gives the feeling of an ancient, weathered sculpture. It is the only female figure of the ensemble, and is formed in similar style as the others, yet she lacks tree trunks for legs. Diverse artistart teacher Moishe Smith reveals another facet of his talent in an amiable assortment of small black spots of residue, and a black rectangle to the right side grounds the viewer. monoprints. These are oil paintings done on plexiglass, then run through a press once to achieve a solitary expression. He treats us to a variety of "Geum," a symphony in red. This Deffebach painting reverberates with traces of ochre, lavender, orange and blue. My eye keeps skating over to a demonstrate confidence and culinary commentary in an original manner. Layne Meacham displays two of his works, both strongly influenced by Visible upon entrance, hangs IT!T loose, colorful still lifes that yellow rectangle dominating the canvas. A cool green brings the mood down, and spots of red and orange, dispersed among thin blue rectangles add steadiness to the viewing. Mixed media piece "Earth Day" comes to life in brilliant hues of magenta, blue, and pink, with a mysterious dark object or "being" n below. Squiggles and well-chose- lines also add to the substance of this animated painting.
