"A lot has happened to the band, and to me as a songwriter," Jay Aston said. "There have been a lot of changes. Our heads my head is in a different space. We changed management. I ended a very dark relationship. Mike left, and he was a lot of fun and I am left to fill whatever void he left with my own personality." Consequently, Jay continues. The songs on the new album are more focused, and there is more of a group ist By KimBerly Johnson Chronicle Music Critic Rtary album, however, represents a departure from the relatively safe haven that Jezebel's first two albums established. Kiss of Life, the 1990 release from the band, has a much harder edge than the first two albums. This change can possibly be attributed to the shaky circumstances in which the members have been embroiled during recent months. The most noticeable result of whatever hardships were endured is the absence of Michael feel because the members have survived a difficult period. "It's exciting this time around," he stated, "because it's more like the first album, which was conceived with our backs against the wall. Jezebel's live show has not been ruined with the exodus of one of the two singers. The band is fueled by a break-u- p new energy and desire. They are also playing smaller places, where the crowds are truly there to see Gene Loves Jezebel, and so the audience rapport is more tangible. Case in point The Nov. 11 show at the Utah State Fairpark Coliseum. Although the Soup Dragons were expected to be the dominant force at this particular performance, Jezebel proved itself to be the real reason for attending. Before the concert, I asked Jay Aston what to expect on that fateful night His reply? "Pure sex" This comment, though meant in fun (I think), has some truth to it in that the performance was a release of sorts. Utah crowds, apparently, are gaining a reputation for being completely crazy, a phenomenon which Jay thinks "might be a method for kicking against repression." Sunday, Nov. 11 turned out to be an ideal night for kicking.
