Just make sure you don't trample the Constitution in the search for your greener pastures, Mr. Blackburn. Dave Kramer Editor: Junior-communicati- This letter comes in response to a letter written by Terrell Blackburn regarding demonstrations here at the university. Campuses across the nation are the centers of free-mind- ed thinking (hopefully) and should certainly cre- remain so. Not only do demonstrations and protests ate an awareness of issues on campus. demonstrations at the University of California-Berkel- ey served to remind the nation of the unfairness being propagated in South Africa. I know. I lived in San Fransisco at the time. And an important message was realized by the Regents Board of California: without students, universities per se would not exist and, therefore, students do have a right to know where Anti-aparthe- id investments are made. Looking back, it would seem that Blackburn's "ridiculous demonstrations" of the 1960s helped us extricate ourselves from a "ridiculous" war. Those demonstrations so inflamed public opinion that the government could not help but respond. If campus demonstrations can keep this nation out of a major war, I would say they are worth the risk of annoying some faculty and students. As for the presence of Khomeini sympathizers on campus, we in the United States unfortunately have a document called the Constitution that protects everybody's rights, not just the rights of white Anglo-Saxo- n Protestants. I, too, am not fond of the idea of Khomeiniites on campus. Maybe we should get rid of the Ku them. Of course, if they go, so do the Klux Klan and the John Birch Society. Where do we stop? don't like any of these groups, but I'm sure there are people on campus who don't like Blacks, Catholics, d art Chicanos, Mormons, fraternity boys and majors. Should we get rid of them, too? What I'm trying to say is that if you don't like "free thinkers," you don't have to be one of them, especially in so-call- ed neo-Nazi- s, long-haire- ute Info ons. Cartoon on Israel was tasteless, inconsiderate Editor: Again, the Chronicle has hit a new low. In the Wednesday, April 27 edition, the Chronicle displayed a political cartoon portraying the uprisings in Israel that broke the rules of good taste. Beneath the cartoon, showing Israeli soldiers gleefully beating the brains out of a Palestinian with rocks and sticks, the caption read: "God's chosen people persuading Palestinians toward peace." What makes this so tasteless is not only the way it shows the sad situation in the Middle East, but the way it portrays the Israeli's and Jews in general. It shows the feelings of the artist are and In the cartoon, the Isreali soldiers are portrayed by having huge noses with Stars of David on their helmets. The reason this portrayal angers me so much is that I haven't seen a cartoon like this since I saw Hitler's papers in Germany. In his political cartoons, he and his Nazi's portrayed Jews as sniveling, evil, big nosed people with Stars of David worn on their arms. This cartoon, in that same way, tries to show these Israeli soldiers (Jews) as being inhuman. When you take humanism out of the picture, it is easy to discredit any group of people. It is easy to show they are evil. You also get great results. Ask any Nazi. Two weeks ago, ASUU sponsored Holocaust Memorial Week. During that week, they handed out yellow Star of David pins and encouraged faculty and students to wear them. The purpose of the pins was to remember our common humanity. If any Chronicle reporter had attended or particpated in any of the events thoughout the week, they may have thought before they ran this cartoon. Congratulations, Chronicle.
