Show I Friday, Apuil 29, 19ft8 Chronic! Chemistry prof named U. vice president A University of Utah distinguished professor of chemistry has been named associate vice president for academics and research computing. David Grant, who has chaired the U. computer task force since it was created, said being an associate vice president is not much different than chairing the computer task force. Grant will still be in charge of the task force, which was formed three years ago to coordinate computers on campus. Grant and the committee have worked to establish the U. computer center and the UNIS system in the Chronicle photo by Guy E. Elder IV David Grant, computer task force chair, has been appointed associate vice president for academic research computing. Grant said the position will not entail any new responsibilities. Gabler 3 mm III cd Marriott Library. Between $15 million and $20 million has been spent to computerize the campus. Grant said. While some of the money has been taken from student funds, Grant said private companies and federal grants have aided the U. in its computer programs. Grant will report to Joe Taylor, vice president for academic affairs, and will work closely with James Brophy, vice president for research. Grant said the No. 1 priority he and the task force faces is developing a networking system between the U. and other universities around the state and country. He also said it's important the task force maintains the computers already on campus. --Todd Curtis i from page one joke," he said. "I don't want a position without any power at all." But Cano said he felt Gabler's withdrawal "definitely had something to do with the bill." "I think he saw a storm coming and wanted to get out of the way," Cano said. Other members of the ASUU cabinet felt the bill gave too much power to one person-tr- ie attorney general. "An increase of power for a single position of that nature would make me sick," Cano said. Shaili Jain, an executive assistant to the president, agreed with Cano that the bill would have given too much power to one person, but said he felt bad that Gabler withdrew. "I think he should have stayed around. He could have gone back and helped to work with the Assembly," Jain said. "It's sad, but this is politics." Fiction and Notice Poetry we know. But he said if the bill was going to give the attorney general more power, he feels failure of such a bill was probably a factor in the withdrawl. Gabler also said he didn't want to work with a "spineless" cabinet. He said if cabinet members had a problem with the bill, they should have come to him and worked it out. He also said he felt he wasn't right for the position. He said there are many things wrong with ASUU, but he doesn't feel he is the right one to change them. Kaly said in the future, Gabler will probably be working as an adviser. He said he doesn't know who the attorney general will be. "I would hope people who are interested would come and talk to me, maybe we can have even more than one," he said. "People can help me out without a title or pos-tioThe title is secondary."
