Show ChRONiclE WEdNEsdAy, Paqe Fourteen Inaccuracies in article Editor: Lori Bona's article titled "Assembly dozes, groans through lengthy session" (Dec. 3) contained a number of factual inaccuracies and omissions. The first factual inaccuracy occurs where Bona writes, "The Special Projects (Fund) committee is part of the executive branch of government. . ." In fact, the Special Projects Fund committee is a joint committee composed of members of the ASUU Assembly, the University Administration and the ASUU Executive Cabinet. To characterize the committee as a part of the Executive Branch implies that the Executive Branch has an independent power of purse, separate from the Assembly. This would be a In or the ASUU this fund, the ASUU Assembly r. i i uc president shall have veto power over wncrc mc iuuu is io ." dispersed. . The Assembly clearly has the power to veto any monies allocated by the Special Project Funds Committee. An interesting omission in Bona's article on this point was that the Assembly exercised this veto power when it gave a "thumbs down" to a $20,000 request that was authorized by the Special Projects Fund committee. Her article gave the impression that the money had been "approved," when in fact it has been vetoed. Bona is an excellent journalist who made some mistakes. The second factual inaccuracy occurs when Bona states that, "Assembly approval has no impact on whether special projects are funded. . ." Article IV, Section 2 "Powers and Duties" of the Assembly states in part that the Assembly has the power ". . . To initiate and, when approved by the Joint Apportionment Board, adopt all apportionments." This section of the ASUU constitution gives the Assembly authority to act all apportionments of ASUU funds. Additionally, the Financial Policies and Procedures contained in the ASUU Redbook outline the power of the Assembly with regard to the Special Projects Fund Committee.
