Show I MoNUy, DecEMbtt 7, 1987 CtlRONiclE Utah swimmers By Glenn Seninger Chronicle assistant sports editor Unlike the showdown in Provo where BYU beat Utah in a thriller of a football the showdown at the Utah game, Natatorium was anything but a thriller. Utah walked away with an easy 150-6- 1 win over the Cougars in Friday's WAC swimming competition. This meeting between Utah and BYU marked the 27th victory for Utah over the Cougars giving it an overall series record This has been a series that has lead seen a good number of the 232 career wins for Utah's men's swimming coach Don Reddish come against the blue and white. "It's always a big meet for us," Reddish said. "All of our swimmers have trained hard and that shows in the score." Utah manhandled the hapless Cougars in nearly every event. The big story for Utah was the return of freshman hopeful Amie 21-1- 8, 27-17- -3. Miles. Miles competed in his first collegiate meet, taking second in the 200 freestyle with a 1:44.44 only seconds behind top finisher Kurt Dickson of BYU. Two sore shoulders had kept Miles from competing in Utah's first meet of the season against UNLV. But he felt ready to start the season against BYU. "It felt good tonight, my shoulders weren't really bothering me," Miles said. "I really don't know what was causing the pain in my shoulders. I guess it was just severe muscle fatigue." edge Y. Utah and Reddish were glad to see Miles return to the team and be ready to compete. "I think he's doing well," Reddish said. "He's had a pretty tough time with all of the injuries he's had and I was glad to see him in there and actually doing something tonight." But Reddish knows Miles hasn't recovered entirely from his shoulder injury. "I just hope he can continue to train and start training hard. That's what I worry more about than anything," he said. Utah dominated in the 400 medley relay with a 3:29.35. Johan Holm, Brian Wilkinson, Toby Johansson and Rick Gilmore helped lead Utah in that event. Utah senior Shawn Rowland finished first in the 200 IM with 1:54.70, while Brooks McCartney took top honors in the 1,000 freestyle with a 9:50.40. In the diving department, David Kooyman dominated as usual. He won both the - and diving events. Kooyman scored 257.93 on the low board and 265.80 1- off the high dive. Utah's Anders Bladh also had a great night winning the 50 freestyle in 21:13 and the 100 freestyle with a 46:20. Johansson won the 200 butterfly beating BYU's Peter Axelson with a 1:54.61, while teammate Holm won the 200 backstroke with a 1:54.08. Taking another first-place spot was Todd Etherington in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:10.31. The "Utes"' next meet is against the Cornhuskers of Nebraska in Lincoln on Dec. 11. Aggies from page twelve Saturday night in the Spectrum gained the Aggies the revenge they wanted and their first win of the season. It was a game Utah couldshould have won if it could only have hit its free throws. But couldshould became couldn't-wouldn- 't as Utah Coach Lynn Archibald's makeshift lineup finally couldn't keep the U. in the game any longer. In all, Smith, Watkins Singletary, Jimmy Madison and Tommy Connor all fouled out for the U. But none was more damaging than the loss of Smith, which came with 7:41 left in regulation when he tried to block a Greg Houskeeper shot. That sent the junior to the bench with only four points and four rebounds. Houskeeper hit both free throws followed by a Jeff Anderson leaping jumper in the lane giving USU its biggest lead of the game to that point, 50-4- 4. The Aggies had several chances to blow the game open, but they couldn't convert when they had the chance. "Utah State did a nice job stopping Mitch and they took our inside game away from us," Archibald said. "But we really had some gutty performances by our players." The gutty performances Archibald spoke of were spearheaded by Hansen. He came in, made three of his five shots for seven points keeping the (one a stalemate in game through regulation and the first overtime. Actually, though, Utah had a chance to salt the game away in both regulation and the first overtime. Gale Gondrezick, who PARTY SPECIAL PQE ThiRTEEN suffered through a miserable shooting night land 1 from the field), hit from with 1:50 left in regulation giving the U. a 54-5- 2 lead. Gondrezick went from hero to goat when situation with :18 he missed a left which could've iced the game. Conway came down with 10 ticks left and calmly hit two free throws to force overtime. It was there that Utah enjoyed a 3-p- (6-2- one-and-o- ne when Gondrezick lead, 63-5- 6, hit a fade away jumper with Conway limping all over the place after getting knocked down on a rebound. Play wasn't halted because Utah had control of the ball seven-poi- nt which incensed most of the 9,092 in attendance. Singletary, who was guarded by Conway while he was injured, was never a factor during Utah's possession. At that time, though, Utah seemed to have everything under control. Then the cheerleader was thrown out for verbally abusing an official making the crowd that much louder. The Aggies took advantage of the partisan crowd by clawing their way back into it with two free throws by Houskeeper and the play of the game when USU guard Kevin Nixon took a lead pass from Anderson after a steal, hit the bucket and was fouled by Hansen They also got some momentum for the second extra five minutes and came right out gunning. What killed Utah was an intentional foul called on Chris Fulton with :21 left and USU leading 70-6- 7. Anderson hit both shots and everything except the final score was decided.
