ASUU Several University of Utah students are joining in the Utah Quest for Peace effort to provide humanitarian aid to Nicaragua. The organization is gathering clothing, medical supplies and educational material to ship to Nicaraguan civilians. Nationally, the project hopes to match dollar for dollar the amount of Contra aid approved by Congress. In the past two years, it has met its goal. "We feel like the concept ofhumanitarian aid has been perverted by Congress," Grady Walker, coordinator of the project and a former U. student, said. "For the most part, people understand what we're doing. It's basically the same thing as Ethiopia only this time it's caused by U.S. government policy," he said. "People are finding something compelling about the nature of this. People feel this is a good way to redress wrongs being done in their name." Walker became involved personally in the project for the same reasons. "It's back to the issue of violence. I don't see ideology or economics as the issue. It has to do with the willingness to be violent. We have to oppose it, wherever it's being done." He admits the effort is small, but hopes to somehow make a difference. "In a small way, and one person is a small way, I'm trying to change things," Walker said. Walker is looking for an organization at the U. that will give him space to locate a donation bin.
