Show The Daily Utah Chronicle, Tuesday, October Page Eight LETTER! Student slams ASUU ad Editor I agree with Phillip Williams, but terming the Oct. 7 ASUU ad a "publicity move" is a little delicate. I want to refute some points in the ad. ASUU states that "the power to propose student fees lies entirely with the administration, and the power to approve and levy those fees lies with the Board of Regents in a process that contains no formal student participation." However, student leaders could have done something to postpone the vote until students could be consulted. The ad says "there is an obvious need for computer literacy." I agree, but what exactly does "computer literacy" mean? What does this program intend to do that is not already provided by specific departments on campus? I know of three departments already offering classes in computer education. The ad also states "the proposal is timely and immediate action was needed." Now, while it may be true that vendors were offering discounts on hardware, the possibility of those discounts being available for an additional three or four months was very good. As for the Board of Regents needing the proposal by September, it could always have been made a tentative proposal and the vote dependent on the student reaction. In the ad's third point: "there arc several immediate advantages available to the student body." Installing all those computers reeks of fine intention, but how many students will actually use them? I'm a senior and already have a computer system. What will I get out of the program? The ads fourth point addresses long-teradvantages, and I have no counter argument for it. The fifth point: "it was obvious that students would m have to bear their share of the program's financial burden." No one is saying that the students should not help financially, but is it fair that students not using the facilities be forced to participate? AS UU cites reasons for approval of the program: "good faith' "need and urgency" and worst of all to "be a leader." Where was ASUU's "good faith" toward the students? The ad says ASUU "has been established by students to communicate student body concerns to the administr- ation." When was the last time your assembly representative asked your opinion on an issue? Chances are, never. Finally, why does ASUU schedule a discussion on the issue during class hours? Why not schedule the discussion during the evening hours when most students are available? Could they be afraid to face us? I think the fee should be similar to a lab fee or to buying time on the Univac currently serving the campus. An fee is unfair. HARVARD UNIVERSITY JOHN F. KENNEDY rd Peter Avion Communications senior Abortion unjustifiable Editor: In response to the opinion by Shia Kapos, I would like to point out that the abortion position rises or falls on the issue of whether the unborn arc human beings or simply pieces of tissue in the mother's body. If a woman takes much time in making an agonizing decision concerning whether or not she should have an abortion, (as Kapos suggests), she obviously doesn't believe the unborn baby is simply a piece of her own tissue, such as a cuticle. No sane person agonizes over cutting a cuticle. The writer took exception to my references at a press conference to the "selfishness" related to the abortion as can be industry. Humans by nature arc seen in the fact that we all tend to look out for ourselves before showing concern for others. This is epitomized in our society by the men who refuse to take responsibility for their part in pregnancy and doctors who are getting self-centere- Are you considering professional school! across-the-boa- d, wealthy performing abortions. Often, a man, for his part in a pregnancy, will pressure a women into having an abortion so that he can avoid responsibility. Parents also often pressure their daughters into abortions so they won't have to face "embarrassment." Being unjustly treated does not justify further injustice. The solution to the problem of an unwanted pregnancy does not lie in trying to justify oneself in doing further wrong. The Christian solution lies in Jesus Christ. There is also selfishness involved in thinking a woman has the "right" to do as she pleases with an unborn baby because it is "dependent" upon her while living inside her. If she can kill a dependent unborn baby in her own interests, why not a dependent baby that has been bora? Thousands of qualified families want to adopt children and arc unable to find them. The fact that many Christians are willing to make "resources and time available" to help women through a crisis pregnancy to adoption by a qualified family, or whatever the mother wants to do with the child, seems a viable alternative to possibly taking part in a murder. We arc all responsible before God for our actions. In an abortion this includes mother, father, doctor and even the journalists. Donald L. Shafer, Pastor Bethel Baptist Church Student is denied parking Editor: I am mad, damn mad. On Oct. 4 I came to campus to find cars backed up from the parking lot. The backup was caused by a campus police officer asking all drivers to be out of the parking lot by 2:30 p.m. The U. wanted us out so it could use the spaces for the football game. What gall the U. has to charge S25 for a parking permit and then deny me the use of it. I am outraged at the use of public funds to pay campus police to babysit these parking lots. This is not where I want to sec my tax dollar or tuition dollar used. Norman Leifer Social work graduate student Feeling stressed out? Is school giving you a headache? Not enough time to study?
