The departure, the latest in an exodus of sports teams from New York, would leave the nation's largest city without a professional football team. Koch said Hess, who owns 75 percent of the team, told him at a Shea meeting Monday that the Jets would leave the Stadium for the New Jersey Meadowlands sports complex after the team's lease at Shea runs out at the end of this season. Hess had complained about conditions at Shea, and the city offered to spend $43 million to improve the stadium and change the team's lease arrangement if the club agreed to remain. Comptroller Harrison Goldin estimated the city's economy would lose at least $33.3 million a year as a result of the Jets move to New Jersey. Koch told him even if the city built a new stadium for the Jets, the team would move to the Meadowlands until the new facility was ready. Despite Hess unconditional refusal to remain in the city, the mayor remained hopeful about keeping the team. "It's my hope that we can convince Leon to change his mind, that the fans can convince him to change his mind, that perhaps he will sell the club," Koch said. He said the city would attempt to lure another professional team to Shea. The mayor insisted the city's offer was equal to or better than the proposal the Jets received from the Meadowlands, where the New York Giants play their home games in the 76,000-se- at Giants stadium. The Jets would share the stadium with the " Giants.; Stan Gorlick, a spokesman for the Meadowlands complex, said no formal agreement had been reached with the Jets. New Jersey officials have been aggressive in their attempts to lure teams to the Garden State. New York lost a professional basketball team when the Nets moved from Nassau Coliseum in suburban Uniondale to the Meadowlands. The Cosmos of the North American Soccer League also moved to the Meadowlands from Yankee Stadium. city-own- e o CD J Now that you're in college, investigate the opportunities afforded by NROTC.
