Show KENNECOTT TO START FOUR-DAY WORK WEEK Ail four divisions of Kennecott Copper Corporation located in Utah, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico will begin a four -day operating schedule effective during dur-ing the first two weeks of May, announced C. D. Michaelson, general manager, Western Mining Min-ing Divisions. Mr. Michaelson, in making the announcement Tuesday, said reduced re-duced production was necessitated necessitat-ed by continued lagging, copper sales. He said a 20 per cent cut in copixT production was necessary and the cut will be effected by the 20 per cent cut in operations. The cut from five to four days a week at Utah Copper Division will be effective May 12, division officials said Tuesday. Although the Utah division will go on a four-day operating week, the refinery will continue on the present schedule for a short time until the reduced rate of output reaches the refinery in the processing cycle. The firm said there will be a minor layoff estimated at 50 men or less effective at the same time. The Utah division now employs approximately 4,800 persons. John C. Kinnear Jr., general manager of the Nevada Mines Division, said the new schedule will be effective at that division May 4. The cutback will be effective ef-fective on the same date at the Chino Mines Division of New Mexico. The work schedule will be the same at all divisions, with four working days Monday through Thursday and closed operations Friday through Sunday. |
