Show The Daily Utah Chronicle, Monday, December f, 132 KRCL coiniciriiltiralts ofd oitoiTiisiftd progiraiinniinnioinig by Maribetb Thueson Chronicle ttau KRCL fills a void in the Salt Lake radio market by providing alternative City programming and public affairs messages, according to the station's development director, 91-F- M John Greene. "We should not be playing things that are on a commercial station, Green said. "Things get aired here that would no way get aired on a commercial station." Greene said KRCL does not broadcast Top 40 music, but does play almost everything else: country, new wave, jazz, soul, punk '60s music, i, 1 in ca J vuiruvu women's music, reggae, gospel and bluegrass. "It's a total eclectic mix," he said. "People go crazy trying to find a program because we're so diverse." Greene said the station also provides media access to people who otherwise would not have an outlet to the community. Ethnic programs are a combination of music and information for Mexicans, Asians, Greeks, Native Americans, Blacks and Polynesians. There are also programs for women, senior citizens, gays, and the handicapped. Many of the station's disc jockeys are minorities, Greene said. Greene said KRCL is a community station; it stresses involvement in the community and volunteerism. The station runs an average of three public service announcements an hour, Greene said. "We're here to provide news and information about the community," Greene said. "We hope to have a positive impact." He said some of the announcements "offer listeners a chance to get involved with projects Page Five enss mm oatouai Atar i t L1AKE TRACKS TO maw iron CICSJTUAS SAV3$! in the community." Many of the announcements deal with minorities and issues and programs, he said. KRCL is a volunteer organization itself. The low-inco- me station has only three salaried employees, Greene said. All disc jockeys are volunteers. The disc jockeys are willing to work for nothing because "it's a fantasy to have your own radio show; it's a big ego gratifier and it's fun," Greene said. Some disc jockeys just "have a special feeling for music and want to share it," he said. Because the station's music library is small, many of the disc jockeys play their own records on the air, Greene said. "That's how we can be so current," he said. "We play records that were released two days ago, and records that never receive heavy promotion." Classic double-breaststyling in Navy-Blu- e Wool.
