For the tirst time, an entirely synthetic mechanism will replace the human body's primary pump. This monumental step in medical technology its present rate, that problem will probably soon be solved with the development of a portable capability for the heart. Beyond such limited questions of practicality, the allocation of public funds for the heart and other high medical technology is an issue itself. brings with it a plethora of ethical which be addressed. must questions The artificial heart in its present form involves the small, implanted pump device connected to an external power system by two drive lines through which compressed air that powers the heart is passed. Life for an artificial heart recipient at this stage will mean being permanently tied to a machine. Whether a patient can give informed consent to such a limited lifestyle whose effects are not fully known 6-f- oot is a question which has yet to be answered. With medical technology progressing at For the large amounts being spent on such development, a relatively small percentage of the population will benefit. When marketed, the artificial heart will cost tens of thousands of dollars for implantation and several thousand dollars a year for maintenance, effectively excluding most of the populace from its use. Might not our medical resources be better deployed developing technology which would have wider benefits? The artificial heart is a WHO DID YOU spectacular advance and it's only regrettable that so few will reap its benefits. SW THIS WJflOAL Htm KfcClNfcNI id; RISING STAR SERIES letters presents The One-M- an by Popular Demand Thanks for nothing Editor: This letter is addressed to Parking Services. I would like to thank you for your help in this stormy weather. was fortunate enough to see you filling your quota of parking I tickets when you should have been helping the many students trying to park. I spent two hours helping people get to parking spaces west of Rice Stadium. I would like to know why you were not there helping, too. I realize you don't want to get those fancy uniforms dirty, or maybe get a smudge on your mighty badges. But why don't you get off your asses and do something good for once. Students need a break once in a while, so in the future see if you can help. Thanks for nothing. Jim Holmes Show That's Back JOHN BAYLEY IN CONCERT i : S37 I V Get with the times Editor: Students, out of necessity, are devout worshippers of the omnipotent time deity. Why is it then that so many of our reverently erected idols on campus are giving us false messages? Michael D. Bradley Awaiting complaints Editor: With the recent choice of Wyoming as the state where the MX missile will be based if passed by Congress, I think back on all the stink that was brought up in Utah when it was thought the MX would be based here. I especially remember when the LDS Church First Preside ency came out firmly against basing the MX here, and then recently there has been a voice of opposition to nuclear warfare by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Why is it that I don't hear anyone complain about the separation of church and state? Sure, these are just opinions of the churches, but how different is this from the Mormon Church coming out against the ERA? I heard the other day on the radio that one reason President Reagan was against basing the MX here in Utah was that he had many close ties with the Mormon Church. V 14 SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1982 8 P.M. UNION BALLROOM Why haven't opponents to the MX complained about the LDS Church's stand on the MX or told the church to keep its nose out of political affairs? Is it only when a church is against what you believe that you then cry "separation of church and state"? We all know that the Mormon Church was one of the big reasons for the failure to ratify the ERA (or so claims the media), so is it then proper to use a church's clout when it comes to fighting for something you want? Don't Miss This Evening of Excitement!! The picket-ni- c next time all the women's groups have their banners on Temple Square, I would like to see some against the church's view on the MX. Let's get rid of these double standards. One other thing why aren't there any cigar smokers on campus? I see plenty of cigarette and pipe smoking, but by golly, I have yet to see someone smoke a cigar. C'mon smokers get together and give cigars a chance to screw up the air I breathe! .
