Foss said the police department aided students whose cars were stuck in snowbanks, closed roads that were blocked with stuck cars and moved traffic. He also said they had to close entrances to campus at Wasatch Drive and Foothill Boulevard, South Medical Drive and Wasatch Drive, and Federal Way between Wasatch Drive and Campus Center Drive. from page one 533-671- 2. 134. Nielson said that amount is more than the total of the same mixture used last year by the end of January. He also said he had 22 workers on snowplows and tractors, 30 shoveling snow by hand and had borrowed workers from other departments to keep the Medical Center entrances and lots cleared of snow. One problem crews faced was keeping the Medical Center free of any dangerous piles of snow with the increased traffic of mcmebers of die press who are on hand at the hospital to receive information on the artificial heart operation. Nielson said he planned to let the workers off at 5 p.m. Wednesday to take breaks, and have them return to clear parking lots and walks at midnight. Nielson estimated he has 100 employees during winter quarter. John D.' Wright, director of Parking Services at the University, said many students created problems by parking their vehicles at the same time workers were clearing the lots. Randy Turpin, director of Plant Operations, said crews were out working before 6 a.m. Wednesday. University President David P. Gardner's office announced that as of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday all night classes were canceled. However, essential University services, such as the Marriott Library, Union services and the computer center remained open with reduced personnel. It was also announced that school was to be held as usual Thursday. of the storm, roads to both Cottonwood canyons closed because were of slides.
