The Return of the Secaucus Sam. which records the weekend reunion of a group of "60s activist friends, took the second place prize. The Day After Trinity, made by Jon Else, concerned Dr. Robert Oppenheimer who invented theatom bomb. The IVar at Home, made by Glenn Silbur and Barry Alexander Brown Nam war movement in Madison. focuses on the anti-Viet Wise. The II films entered in the competition were all crowd-pleaser- s at the festival and many performances were sold out of the week. Additional showings of Heartland the middle by and The Return of the Secaucus Sam were added to meet audience demand. The compe tition jury included: Roger Ebert. film critic of and star of PBS' Sneak Previews: the Chicago Mark Rosenberg, vice president in charge of produc tion at Warner Brother's Studios; Jonathan Demme. director of another popular festival film. Melvin and Howard; and other film industry notables. The winners of the independent film competition were announced Saturday night at a dinner at which actor Henry Sun-Tim- es Fonda was awarded the John Ford Medallion for achievement in American films. His son. actor director Peter Fonda, accepted the award. Heartland was written by Beth Ferris and directed by Richard Pearce.
