Adam Brenkman has become known as the Mr. Clean of Tremonton with his immaculate looking yard and his enthusiasm-f- or penchant-ev- en gard- ening and maintaining not only his own property but neighbor's and even the city's. Brenkman started his hobby of collecting aluminum cans in the all of 1975. "The grandkids were going to collect cans but their mother said 'no'," he recalled. "Then I took it up. I told people I'm gathering up cans for my grandkids." He adds with a twinkle, "I am in a way, everytime I sell some I make my son give the kids a dollar." His son takes the cans to Ogden occasionally to a recycling center. Meticulous at about everything he does, Mr. Brenkman keeps a running record of the cans he collects on a sheet of paper. He has 3,950 cans stored away neatly in large garbage bags and old Purina bags. He uses a sledge hammer to flatten the cans for storing. "I had an interesting incident happen hunting cans," he said. While hunting along a road near the canal west of Garland, Mr. Brenkman said he was "stomping cans with a sledgehammer when a mouse stuck his head out of an eight ounce beer can where he'd made his home. "It was the darndest thing I ever saw," he laughed. On a recent trip hunting cans, the former druggist got 108 from the high school parking lot east of the school. In the spring of 1976 he collected 276 in one trip along both sides of the highway between the Cross Roads and town. Monday he was on Tremont St. where he collected another 80 in a few moments. "I work that three or four times every summer," he added. . "It's amazing how many you pick up in the gutter right in front of people's homes," he said. "You'll never get rich" collecting cans Brenkman says. But that isn't the reason he does it. Besides his penchant for keeping things neat and attractive looking, Mr. Brenkman likes the exercise he gets. bucket but he doesn't take that along in the car. "It's kind of conspicuous," he said. Brenkman, whose father used to do yard work in his retirement years, has always believed in keeping things looking nice. "A few years ago I even ran ads in the paper about civic pride and signed my name at the bottom," he recalled. '"I've always been kind of cranky that "It gives me walking and benmng When Brenkman isn't getting exercise he and his wife get plenty of it on the bowling lanes. "I didn't start bowling until I was 59 in I960," he said. The couple now have a houseful of trophies and bowl three nights a week. It is useful mainly for high value cash crops where water is limited and expensive, V aV-1- . - till - V- - r i The most important thing to do in irrigation is to match the rate of flow to ability of soil to absorb and for the specific crop being grown. Irrigation systems differ in water delivery rates. Before any final decision on which system to install, check with the Soil Conservation Service. SCS personnel use irrigation and technical guides to determine suitability and efficiency of various systems. I ,' To How many acres and what crops may have to be adjusted? Since some crops use more water than others, it would be smart to plant those that use the least if other conditions are favorable. Here are some maintenance chores which should not be overlooked: Clean and inspect the irrigation system before water is turned out irom canals. Consider lining ditches. Ditches can lose through leakage 10 - 90 percent of the irrigation water transport: ' ed.) Level (grade uniformly) your fields to distribute water to plants with greatest possible efficiency. In summary, be aware of these three aspects of irrigation: Delivery of water to a sions. "Stay in touch" is a phrase that will take on extra meaning this year for farmers who depend on irrigation water. The Soil Conservation Service says latest measurements of mountain snow-pachold out little hope for a normal amount of water for irrigation in most areas of the West. Since most water in the West comes from mountain snowpacks which are measured at least once a month each winter and spring, the severe deficiency of snow means there is hardly a chance that irrigation farming can operate "as usual." t!feff ir i? irrigated only when moisture is needed in the soil.
