With a team in which sophomores are "the best lifters," the Bears hope to get the experience which could mean better things for them one or two years from this spring. About 30 Bear River wrestlers will compete. Only 11 men are allowed in state competition. Admission to the competition is 50 cents a person, with proceeds being split equally between the two schools. Proceeds will be put back into the weight-liftin- g programs. because "they've been lifting quite a bit longer than us," Jacobsen admitted. But Bear River has a couple of people who could do well. Sophomores Randy Gibbs of Portage and Jeff Oyler will be tough on the upper end. And Mike Bardwell is expected to do big things in the low UMPH ! That's what it takes to get it off the ground. Above Randy Gibbs starins at the bar during practices. Gibb's is one of the more touted members of a young Bear River weight lifting squad. Here's Dear River Baseball Schedule weight at team is trying to figure out how to break the whammy that a Blackfoot, Idaho, team has exercised over them for the past two years. The Blackfoot Twelfth Ward team knocked the Sixth warders out of a title spot in area basketball play last year at Rexburg in the championship game. This year the Blackfoot team edged Sixth by three points in the third game of the area tournament winning being named football coach last summer in order to help upgrade his program. The coach feels the young program is already showing up in increased speed in his linemen. High School weight lifting competition is relatively new all over the state. The first state high school championships were held last year at Granger High. Box Elder should have 'the edge 115. Sixth Ward IDS senior men's basketball Lanny Lewis, a junior, is another top prospect. Lifters compete in three lifts, bench press, squat and dead lift, adding the weights together for a total weight. Jacobsen began implementing a weight program immediately after year. 4--1 ' r5wr . ' w r ' - "If he can make weight he can break every weight record at state" in his class, Jacobsen predicted. Umph! It takes lots of umph to get 210 pounds over your chest in a bench press. But Bear River and Box Elder High weight lifters will be pushing that much weight and probably more in the air when the two teams meet Thursday evening. Weight lifters from both schools are slated to square off at 7 p.m. at Box Elder High to compete for trophies in eleven categories, ranging from the class to the unlimited of 200 pounds and over. Bear River Coach Bill Jacobsen says the match will be a first for Bear River lifters who fielded their first team this 68-6- The Sixth warders had trouble dealing with a 6'8" center who literally plugged up the middle of the key defensively. And the Blackfoot squad had the men to run with the local team. Sixth ward breezed through the first two games, defeating Jackson Hole, Wyo. and Woodville, Idaho. Sixth ward's explorer squad also got beat out in area play in two games. The young Sixth warders lead the ran up a first night against McCamm-on- , Idaho, but McCammon fought back to take a five-poilead. The Sixth warders came back in the final stanza to pull off the victory. The following night a taller Lovell, Wyo. team held the lead much of the game to knock the home team out of action. In Young Adult action, the Tremonton Second ward team lost their opening game to a Nampa, Idaho team and moved into the consolation side. The squad posted a second night victory over Tetonia, Wyo. But in third round olav. the Second warders fell to a blackf oot ward. Ahead by 10 points with four minutes left, the Blackfoot team erased the deficit in time to win. 270-pou- nt nt .
