THE Cubs Begin Season LEADER-GARLAN- D Bear River Junior High will kick off the football season Friday, Sept. 17, at home against Logan. Game time is 2:10 p.m. The Cubs, coached by Myrl Perry, have a six game schedule lined up with Preston on Sept. 23 followed by North Cache here, South Cache and Box Elder away and Intermountain School here. Coach Perry has had his chargers practicing for two weeks now. He's looking at four players at the quarterback spot with Richard Mortensen, Shane Hirschi, Erick Shumway and Blair Westergard vying for the spot. Westergard also looks good for a halfback spot. Shane Anderson and Mike Kose are in line for duty at the running back slots as P FIGHTING IT OUR for the quarterback spot on this year's Bear River Junior High football team are (1 to r) Erick Shumway, Shane Hirschi, Richard Mortensen and Blair Westergard. Twenty seniors back from last year's luckless crew should provide some experience. "This year we have two goals," Malnar said. "Instead of going for points we want to gain yards." The second goal is to shore up a defense which gave up 35 points per game while the offense was gaining only 7.9 points per game. The Grizzlies combine an n which they switched to at last offense. a set with pro year "The players are familiar with the formation and combined with the pro type offense. It gives us a more onfusing attack," he said. According to the coach, the Grizzlies will divide their passing and running attack approximately The Bears on the other hand want to get back to the off tackle running, the sweeps and the option while throwing a little. "We've got to come back to the things we do well," Jacobsen said. Fans can tell when the Bears are passing like Jacobsen wants them to when back Curt Kidman is making a lot of catches. The coach likes the short pass to the man coming out of the backfield into the flats. It worked well against Payson, but Cedar had scouted the game and shut the pass off. As a result the Bears had to go with the pass over the middle and deeper to its ends. Logan uses the Monster defense adding a roving linebacker who lines up on the strong side. The Bears, conversely, will attempt to run to the weak side. The Bears have also been working on a couple of new plays for the game. Given the overall performance of his defense, Jacobsen figures to be a little more daring'with his offense. He recalled a fourth down play on the Cedar 45 yard line that he wishes he'd gone for now counting off the defense to, hold if it failed. Specialty teams will get extra work this week. Jacobsen said he wasn't satisfied with the punt coverage although punter Kim Hales did a good job hanging the ball up and going for distance. And hopefully, the Bears will cut off the big play. Jacobsen said his defense played Cedar right on both of its big plays but didn't do the job. "We stunted right into the play every time but the tackle and linebacker ran right by," he said. Even though they lost to Cedar, Jacobsen feels his team is "ready to play football." mid-seaso- Against Logan Beating Logan Friday night won't guartournament berth for the Bears this fall but it sure would give them an edge. The Bears take on the Grizzlies here at home at 7 a.m. in the Region One league opener. The rules say that the team with the best record between Bear River and Logan goes team to get into the into a playoff with a antee a 3-- A But, if both teams should have identical records, the tournament nod will go to the team which managed to beat the other rather than having a playoff between the two. The game should not be a difficult one for the Bears to get up for. Logan compiled only a 8 record last year and, you guessed it, the Bears gave them that one in the last game of the season. Logan is coming off a 2 loss to power Springville just as the Bears are Cedar. coming off a 6 loss to Coach. Bill Jacobsen, thinks this year's Logan crew Is "ten rimes Better man 3-- A 3-- A "Logan has got a good football team," he said. "We've got to be more mentally prepared than last game." Jacobsen has been taking full responsibility this past week for his team's loss to Cedar saying they weren't mentally ready. One problem he pointed out was the offense's inability in the first half to adjust to a strange defensive alignment until halftime instructions were issued. The coach has told his chargers to start talking about their assignments among themselves on the way to the line. They can't afford to wait until halftime to come up with their adjustments, he added. It just comes down to mental. . .and that's the coach's responsibility.. .hopefully, this week I'll do a better job." Jacobsen feels he knows what Logan will be doing having scouted them once and have gone over a game film provided by his brother who coaches at Springville. "I feel we know what Logan's doing.. .it's just a question of can our kids make the , tackle," he said. Defensively, Jacobsen feels his chargers "got beat to the punch the whole game", against Cedar. Tackle John Hurley should be' back to good health at the defensive tackle spot for Logan. And Lanny Lewis, 185 pounds, has been switched from center to defensive tackle. Jacobsen said he'll be looking at a couple of other positions early in the game Friday. "If they don't perform well early we'll make some changes!'
