A recent Supreme Court ruling relieved local govern-rment- s of the necessity of jgaying overtime. It was only about a year ago that Labor Department personnel ordered the county to pay a few thousand dollars worth of back overtime pay to Road Department employees because of new federal wage requirements. Asked Tuesday if they will attempt to recoup that money in view of the court's turnabout of the reqirement, Commission Chairman Don Chase said, "No." Commissioner Ted Burt agreed and added, "As a matter of fact, we're going to continue to pay it." That prompted a "We are?" response from Chase, who said he had understood the commissioners had decided to return to their old policy. That policy was to pay strictly straight time to employees even for overtime hours. Burt said he had instructed the road department that overtime pay would continue but indicated he might have to give new instructions if he had misunderstood the commission. "Inasmuch as we've paid it, we're going to be in trouble if we quit," he said. "Actually, I don't think you're going to get people to go out and push snow in the middle of the night, without paying overtime," Burt add- other tricts showed none paying overtime. Employees had been getting overtime pay to act as building supervisors communduring after-hour- s ity activities. The Overtime hours will continue to be offered, Haws saul Jbuteraployees are free to refuse it. The superintendent said college students can be hired for $2.50 an hour for the supervisory work with no difficulty. Custodians received $5 to $7 an hour for straight time. The Board will continue to pay the minimum wage of $2.20 to student help even though the court's ruling apparently relieved them of the responsibility. Board member, Ralph Carter urged Haws to survey that policy in other districts, saying the logic of reducing overtime pay for family heads but maintaining the wage for students escaped him. When the wage and hour law. was enacted many local governments . local budgets. Another wage action by the commission may be putting a strain among elected county officials. The raise was confirmed. Commissioners apparently acted on the raise August 3, making it retroactive to August 1. Beecher was reer ceiving $12,575 and was boosted up to an even $14,000. The raise came in Beecher's responsibilities as county engineer- -a position. His salary also includes about $800 for his duties as a surveyor-a- n elected post.
