Show 6, THE Page LEADER-GARLAN- TIMES, May D 26 Miles 13, 1976 Is Just Fun Kfof For Dad, Daughter Running 26 miles was all in a day's work for Polly Bjorn Saturday as she tried out her legs in the Golden Spike Marathon from Promontory to Brigham City. And she wasn't alone. Besides the 53 of whom other runners who started-4- 4 was joined by her finished-s- he father, Duane, on the adventure. "We're not out to run any race just to see if we can possibly run that far," is how Mr. Bjorn put it to his daughter, Mrs. Bjorn said. While Dad's effort was good enough only for the satisfaction of having finished, Polly's won her first place in the women's division. Both finished the race in a time of four hours and thirty minutes. Winning time of the day went to Rick Lower, 23. of Ft. Collins, Colo., who ran the distance in two hours forty-on- e minutes. Both Dad and daughter finished together although Mr. Bjorn admits, "she was ahead of me." The race was the first try for either although both plus, a couple of the bovs in the family, had participated in a "turkey trot" race in Brigham. "I started running for exercise after reading an article," Mr. Bjorn said. "I '; thought the kids should too." "It's just amazing how good the kids can get," he added. "Polly will go out everyday and train." "She's had me get her up at 6:30 a.m. so she could run before school more than once," Mrs. Bjorn added. Polly got the honor of running in the race with her dad rather than one of the younger boys because "we figured we couldn't keep track of the others... and she happened to be the fastest," her father praised. And Mom added, "She was the most faithful about going out every night to Eight Bear River high cowboys and cowgirls qualified for the state rodeo finals, and won several other honors at the annual Bear River high schoolk rodeo held last weekend. Reigning as queen over the rodeo was Nancy Jensen of Plain City. Her attendants were Shannon Allred of Layton and Shara Dawn Summers of Bear River. Chosen to be the cowboy for the annual rodeo was Johny Roche of Bear River. He is currently a senior at Bear River. Jan Wayman was named cowgirl. Bear River rodeoers took six first places in the various events. Winning first place in the barebacks was Todd Williams. Johny Roche won first place in the bullriding category. Wade Stark placed first in the calf roping. The team roping was won by the team "I tried to hold Polly back, that's was in there," he added. Race officials warned runners that too often they over pace themselves. "We felt pretty good for the first 15 miles," he noted. Runners were able to get a drink at check points located five miles why I apart. Dad jokinly says the only time he really felt like quitting the race was "about 26 miles out." Things Hatching At Bird Refuge 4-- Canada geese are beginning to hatch at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and broods of the young goslings may be observed from the refuge 12 mile auto tour route. A few broods of early nesting ducks such as the mallard have also hatched in the last week.
