But two Plymouth men recently spent in Texas not only looking at but catching rattlesnakes. Jim Wakley and Mark Mason showed up back in Utah Tuesday with a pen full of Western Diamond Back rattlers and a couple of garbage cans with smaller two-wee- Prarrie rattlers. J The largest measured a wriggling long, weighed about eight pounds, had 20 rattles and a mouth big enough to swallow a baseball whole. "You don't see rattlesnakes that large anywhere around here," Wakley said. Wakley got the bug to catch rattlesnakes during a two year mission to Texas for the LDS church. "I met this guy who made rattlesnake belts and I liked it," he said. The pair hope to use the skins for a similar purpose. They'll use the rattles to make tie clasps and the heads as belt buckles for the belts. Some of the larger snakes will be stuffed. They hope to contact university and medical people about selling the venom. "We eat the meat," Wakley said. He claims several valley residents are interested in sharing the delicacy. Wakley said snakes were selling for $5 a pound in Texas when the pair left after spending two weeks. ' Mason, who had never caught rattlers before, admitted the experience was a bit nerve racking at first. "Mason about got bit," Wakley revealed. "He about stepped right in the middle of one." "Without the rattles, man, I would have got it," Mason said. Added Wakley, "Every time Mason found a snake, I could tell by the tone of his voice." The pair hunted in the Oddessa-Midlan- d area of West Texas and spent a ' day in Oklahoma. Because of the cooler air the snakes returned to a hibernation state when brought into Utah. But, once inside a warm building, they start becoming active and start rattling. "When they all get wound up you can't even hear because of the rattles," Wakley added. The pair claim the rattlesnakes are "just a hobby. We want to see if we can make a little money off of them. The trip and catching them was most of the fun." Wakley said rattlers are largely deaf. "That's why people can step right on them." But they detect slight changes in heat with their tongue and sense changes in air vibrations to locate their prey. The two young hunters were last seen heading off with their 70 or 80 tlesnakes towards homes where two unsuspecting mothers were waiting their Cultivator toois 159 10-22- x 15" Chisel all makes.
