Show THE GARLAND TIMES, LEADER-TH- E July 10, 1975, Page 9 Special Archery Elh Season Set This Year A special archery open bull elk season was authorized to run concurrently with the archery deer season on the rifle open bull units. The Board, however, denied a request by archers who wanted to apply for special elk permits for use during the archery season, as applications could not be processed in time. The special permit drawing is set for ery Aug. 25, while the archhunt begins Aug. 16. A midweek elk opener was unanimously approved by the Board, which set the opener on the Wednesday nearest Oct. 1 for the next five years. This year's hunt will be from Oct. 1 through 13. The Board made changes in four elk hunt unit recommendations. Team roping, an event dependent largely upon team work, ended up in a tie for first and second place. The winning teams were Jeff Harrison and Ron Wakley and Roger and Jeff Oyler. A tenth of a second behind them for third place was the team of Matt Swan and Ike Swan. The WANTED barrel racing competition ended with only tenths of a second determining winners. JoAnn Roche, and Alice Edward run the fastest time with a tie of :18.6 seconds. Close behind them in second place was Nadine Barker, :18.7. Two hundred permits had been recommended in a smaller area bounded on the north by Fc-cl- es Canyon. The Board unanimously voted to allow 100 anterless permits in the Fishlake unit (14). It also adopted a proposal to issue 50 bull elk permits on the Book Cliffs unit (21). The Board approved a motion to issue 100 nonresident open bull elk permits to holders of nonresident big game licenses. It also approved conditional elk and deer hunts to be authorized on open bull elk units and any deer units where deemed necessary by the Division of Wildlife Resources. The Board raised the fee of the 5 "bighorn sheep, 10 buffalo and 25 moose permits to $100. Those three game species may be Hunted only once in a lifetime in Utah. The bighorn sheep hunt will be Sept. 20 to Sept. 28 on the San Juan unit, while both running the barrels in a time of :18.8 seconds. JoAnn Roche won the goat tying event as well as the barrels. She tied the goat in 12 seconds flat. Second place was won by Debbie Wilde in 12.6 seconds.
