Show Prof. Marie Krueger, head of the Department of Home Economics and Consumer Education, inspects reproductions of pioneer costumes that will be modeled at the Great West Fair. Brigham Young, the great Mormon leader (shown in the drawing at right), played a leading role in the removal of the Mormons from Missouri to Illinois, and later lead the Saints (as they called themselves) across the plains to their new home in the West. He was responsible for organizing the Mormons into groups jfor the western trek and supervised every move in detail. In July, 1847, the Mormon Prophet lead an advance band of Saints into the valley of the Great Salt Lake, where he directed the L.D.S. members to settle. He founded Salt Lake City, began the cultivation of crops by irrigation and directed the dispersal of the emigrant trains as they arrived in the valley.
