The press is capable of the finest 4 color process printing available in the trade. Providing the printing plates for the huge press is the job of the Robertson 320 process camera. This camera will photograph a full newspaper page and produce a negative used in making the offset printing plate. The camera is housed in a specially built darkroom in the Leader plant. The answer is not simple, there are many reasons both for and against conversion to the offset process. Since offset is basically a photographic process it provides much more flexibility and ease of page composition than the hot lead type process most newspapers use. The lead type is then proofed and reproduction proofs : made to facilitate paste-u- p compositioa costs, much greater flexibility as to usable copy for advertising and news since virtually any art work, drawing, catalogue material, as well as the, conventional mats for letterpress printing may now be used for copy in advertising. The use of spot color advertising is also a big advantage with the offset process. Since the equipment used is of higher adquality and higher speed, vertisers who desire this service can readily have color in their ads at a reasonable price. What offset means to the reader is easily recognized. Offset printing . quality is much finer than the old method used. So the reader can enjoy better printed newspapers, with clearer type and pictures and the of pictures and color in his ads.
