Show THE BEAVER PRESS Coach Calvin Albrechts' Beavers passed the test last Saturday salvaging a victory over Bryce Valley in the Region 12 Tournament hosted by Kanab. The Beavers drew a bye during Fridays opening action and had to wait until Saturday night to gefthe first game jitters out of the wayT Saturday's victory accomplished the most important goal for Beaver in the tournament and that was landing a berth in the State Tournament at S.U.S.C. March Saturday's win also moved the Beavers into the semi-finaagainst Piute. The winner will play Saturday for the Region 12 championship's against Enterprise or Kanab. The Beavers were cold from the foul line as they managed only to connect on 11 of 31 attempts. However, they shot 52 percent from the field which gave them the edge. A four point play in the fourth quarter opened up a 10 point lead for the Beavers giving them the needed point spread to hang on. Joe Kelsey' drew a 2 shot international foul to open the play; then Shay Goff hit a 12 foot jumper after Kelsey 's 2 made free throws to open up the game for Beaver. W ith 7 seconds remaining in the final quarter, Bryce Valley capitalized on it's own four point play when one of the Mustang's was fouled and made a 3 point shot. However, it was too late for a comeback. The Beavers slapped a tough defense on the Mustangs throughout the battle, but the Mustangs hit 20 of 26 from the Charity Stripe to keep the contest close for three quarters, Goff gave the Beavers 23, followed by Kelsey with 19 and Gary Brown with 9. Noni's Truck Stop Cafe Village Beauty & 3 1988-P-AGE The Beaver High School Basketball team captured the Region 12 Title last Saturday night at Kanab in a thrilling battle that went to the wire as Senior ace Shay Goff calmly sank two shots from the Charity stripe with three seconds left in the game to lift Coach Calvin Albrechts' Beavers to a 3 win over the Kanab Cowboys. Since the Cowboys have been in their new gym the Beavers have accumulated a 13-- 1 record on their rivals home hardboard. Beaver also won the Region Title in 1984 over the Cowboys. Kanab earned the right to play for the Region Championship by knocking off number two ranked Enterprise while the Beavers moved into the title game by defeating Piute. Enterprise, two time state champions have only lost two games by schools since 1986. Beaver defeated the Wolves in the Region 12 Tournament at Panguitch and Kanab edged Enterprise in this years tournament in an exciting overtime battle.
