Show 16 it Endurance, perse rye ranee keep athlete competing by Gary Boyle WAcp Times sta In an Iron Man triathlon competition individual endurance and perseverance are put to the e test. An average course consists of a bike ride and a 26.2-mil- e run. swim. 1 "The first triathlon was thought up by some Navy guys who wanted to see who was tlie toug! est It took them two days, tliere are professionals now who finish the event in about eight hours 2.4-miI- 12-mi- and most people finish within 12 hours." said Staff Sift. Robert Wieland who has competed in three iron man triathlons in the past two years, including the world championship competition in Hawaii. " I finished the California Iron Man competition in San Diego in nine hours and was 47th overall. I didn't do so well in Hawaii but I'm hoping to qualify again this year and improve." Wieland, a cameraman in the 3(57th Training Support Squadron, began competing in triathlons in 1994 when a U-- 2 pilot noticed his rigorous recreational style. "I worked at Beale AFB in California. I rode my bike to work everyday, swam after work and ran during lunch," said Wieland. "My first triathlon I finished in the top 20 out of over 100 competitors. I came out of the water in last place but made up time in the bike and run. I decided to learn to swim so I could do better and raced the next month and placed in the top 10." Training for competition requires motivated intensity. Wieland usually trains alone swimming before work and running or biking during lunch. IVeparing for this year's competitions he swam 40.000 meters a month and biked 40,000 miles between December and September. A 1 ,000 hours of training and $3,(XK) of his money were invested in this year's competitions. Wieland trains on base for safety reasons even bike rides. He spends about when doing 60 days a year TI) Y and brings special cables 100-mil- e 1 with him that allow him to simulate distances in lisle pools. He also uses treadmills and stationary bikes when he has to. "I eat what my wife makes for me." said Wieland. "She keeps my diet in order." "The Iron Man competitions are an extension of the triathlon and I find the physical and mental challenge very rewarding." said Wieland 1 represent the Air Force at competitions who provide me the opportunity to compete and significantly backs me financially." Over the years he's competed in the Armed Services Triathlon competition at Ft. Mugu Ventura Naval Air Station. The World Championship Competition, which attracts 1200 international competitors, is comparable in prestige to the Olympic triathlon, which is actually about a quarter of the distance of the Iron Man competitions. Competitions are rated by length. Staff 112-mil- cover less than half of that and are known as sprint triathlons, Wieland finished one such competition at Hill in October in under an hour. The short races are pure speed where you go all out pushing yourself to the extreme the whole way. I'm 34 now so I'm reaching the end of my endurance," said Wieland. "There are people who're competing in their 70s so I am going to keep competing for quite a while longer." His children, Nate and Emma also want to put their endurance to the test, but will have to wait for a while. "My son is 5 and my daughter is 2. My wife Jenny runs a lot but we don't get to run together as much as we'd like because we have kids, though we do have a jogger stroller to take the youngsters along," said Wieland. "I try to train during hours that don't take time away from my family because they are more important to me than training."
