As they do words like "monopoly," "giantism," Small Business Office Most every employee on base has a direct or indirect purpose to keep the planes flying or the base running. The Small Business Office at Hill AFB does the same; however, it also has an additional purpose that goes beyond the needs of the base. The Small Business Directorate is made up of six people. The laws they follow and policies they implement were created to keep the overall national economy "flying" and "running." They keep the scale of business opportunity between large and small companies in balance, not to stifle the economy, but to stimulate it Congress, long ago, recognized that the economic backbone of the country is the contribt ition of small business. Even today, there are 25.5 million small businesses that employ more than half of the country's private work force. Three of every four new jobs are created by small businesses that also generate a majority of American "conglomerate" and "mergers" sometimes begin to be heard. Many small businesses are absorbed. Big businesses have a tendency to control market areas. With congressional laws and federal policies, the Small Business Office protects that vitally important "competition" which in turn keeps prices down, quality up and helps our national economy grow strong.
