Brian Mauhar 75th Civil Engineering Group A new system belonging to the 75th Civil Engineering Group has improved the base electrical distribution system. The $2.3 million Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System was installed by the Army Corps of Engineers over the last two years. SCAD A, an control and monitoring system, monitors and tracks the history of Hill AFB's 64,000-vol- t power lines and controls main substations and switches from a shop computer. "The system is an invaluable tool for our electricians to increase base power reliability," said 1st Lt. Kirk Folk, electrical engineer. The system also allows exterior electric personnel to recognize a fault condition sometimes even before an actual fault occurs. A fault may be a tree branch, a squirrel, snake or other problem. If a tree branch had fallen across two or three standard lines, the line would blow out. By using SCAD A, power can be restored 30 minutes earlier to the customer by making the necessary switch changes to backfeed the area with no electro-mechanic- al interruption of power. Electricians can now record detailed electrical data history at key locations. SCADA monitors how much voltage a building is using and can detect corroding of the lines (amperage will go up). They can locate new users, track potential problems that be may be corrected prior to failure. By looking at history trends, distribution hardware problems can be located and corrected more effi- Col. Bill Wittliff, individual mobilization augmentee to 75th Civil Engineering Group commander, was recently named 1998 Engineer by the 6,500 mem- ber Texas Society of Engineers. He will receive his award at the society's annual meeting, June 19 in Fort Worth. , Wittliff was commissioned through the Air Force ROTC program in 1972 and served nine years on active duty prior to 774-077- 0 Payday Loans Signature inherent authority to investigate ma- tters under their jurisdiction Post Dated Checks Secured Loans strikes near the transformer, the high reset at the substation or remotely by SCADA. This increases safety for electricians. The advantage to base customers is reduced unscheduled power outages for shorter duration which equates to more money staying in the customer's pocket. Operational readiness also remains high when hands aren't tied because of downed electrical service. In addition to his 75th CEG duties, Wittliff oversees Air Force Materiel Command's core basing program for 43 civil engineering reservists including firefighters. His participation in the Air Force Reserve was one of the factors contributing to his selection as the Texas Society's Engineer of the Year. In civilian life, Wittliff is chief engineer for the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission, which helps pro- tect public health and the environment in the Lone Star State.
