And that's our job. LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. People issues and retention, especially among Air Combat Command aircrews, has Gen. Dick Hawley, ACC commander, taking action. Hawley will brief ACC aircrews during May on his plan to address the concerns they identified in recent focus group and tiger team meetings. "My focus is on rated officers at this point in time because that's where the near-terthreat is," said Hawley, "but it does not come at the expense of any other part of the force." "I'm concerned about all the people in ACC all the time. I'm meeting with aircrew members now because they are uniquely impacted by a number of the changes that have occurred over the past several m Gen. Dick Hawley commander, Air Combat Command years." During the tiger team meetings, aircrews were surveyed through questionnaires and group interviews to identify their primary concerns with retention, said Maj. Lernes Hebert, chief, Assignment Issues and Analysis Branch at ACC. Topping the list of concerns are leadership and oper ations tempo, followed by assignments, career progression, and erosion of benefits. Hawley said alleviating these problems will improve life for everyone in the command. "It won't matter if we have the greatest technology in the world. If people don't stay, we can't fly airplanes. And that's our job," said Hawley. Aircrew retention rates are on the decline across the Air Force, said Hebert. This is indicated by the drop in the number of people taking Aviator Continuation Pay, a bonus for pilots and traditionally a lead indicator of their retention. The ACP "take" rate in the Air Force fell from 77 percent to 58 percent in the past year. Hawley is scheduled to visit Hill AFB May 22.
