Show 18 Hilltop Times April 25, 1996 hoopsters place second Hill TSgt. assistant coach of Armed Forces Championships F women's team 996 team Air Force in 1 RANDOLPH AFB, Texas (AFNS) -After a grueling week of exciting games, the Air Force men's and women's basketball teams each came out in second place during the 1996 Armed Forces Basketball Championships. The men's championships were held at The Air Camp Lejeune, N.C., April Force men's team totaled 2 wins and 2 loss to losses, finishing up with an 87-7- 2 the Navy team in the finals. The following men comprised the 1996 Air Force team: retired Capt. Clarence Ryan (officer in charge), Houston, Texas; SMSgt. Jarvia Hardley (coach). Pentagon; MSgt. Jimmy Howard (assistant coach), Eglin AFB, Fla.; Kevin Davalos (trainer), Pope AFB, N.C.; SrA. James Armstrong, Robins AFB, Ga.; SSgt. Kelvin Blevins, Little Rock AFB, Ark.; SrA. Mark Watley, Kunsan AB, Korea; SSgt. Kyle James, Nellis AFB, Nev.; SrA. Troy Myles, Keesler AFB, Miss.; Capt. Steven Warrior, Offutt AFB, Neb.; TSgt. Marvin Hires, Cheyenne Mountain AFS, Colo.; 2nd Lt. Christopher Loll, USAF Academy, Colo.; SrA. Sam Coger, Hurlburt Field, Fla.; SSgt. Michael Owens, Kadena AB, Japan; 2nd Lt. Sterling Collins, Robins AFB; and SSgt. Mark Forbes, Hurlburt Field. Loll was chosen for the Armed Forces team, which is composed of the best basketball players from each branch of the service. This team will represent the U.S. Armed Forces in the Conseil International du Sport Militare (CISM) competition against military teams from around the world. This year's basketball CISM is scheduled from April 28 to May 12, 1996, at Fort Hood, Texas. The Air Force women's basketball competed at Memphis Naval Air Station, Tenn., April They finished the competition with a record, playing a strong game against the Army team in the finals. Tracy Kinton, Vandenberg AFB, Calif.; SrA. Stephanie Garner, Lackland AFB, Texas; A1C Felicia Young, Maxwell AFB; A1C Stacy Williams, Boiling AFB, D.C.; A1C Kathy Jordan, Barksdale AFB, La.; SSgt. Osby, Kirtland AFB, N.M.; A1C Veda McNeal, Goodfellow AFB, Texas; and A1C Pam Noble, Kirtland AFB. "I definitely enjoyed the opportunity to represent my service," stated Vanheertum. "We played hard and I think our team deserves a lot of credit for coming from the losers bracket and making the finals. If anyone has the opportunity and skill, the Air Porce Sports Program is a great way to go. It's a lot of fun and you get to meet many great people. Kenneth "Ken-do- " Hardy, from Hill's 775th Civil Engineer Squadron was one of the assistant coaches for the 1996 All-AForce women's basketball team. The Air Force team placed second to all-st- 76-4- Kan. Hardy, a Columbus, Ga., native, has been playing basketball since high school, playing both junior varsity and varsity ball for West Georgia College, which won the National Athletic Intercollegiate Association basketball tournament in 1976. "The assistant coach at West Georgia was Jerry Reynolds, who is now the general manager for the Sacramento Kings," Hardy said.
