Show Oct. 27, Powwow coming to Hill by Jacque Laursen Financial Management Directorate According to the National Geographic Society, the phrase "pau wau" once meant medicine man or spiritual leader to Algonquin tribes, but Europeans who watched medicine men dance thought the word referred to the whole event. What those Europeans watched did not resemble what happens today. The tradition of Indian dancing is ancient, but today's powwows have developed over the past century. Powwows are gatherings in which Indians of many nations come together, often from far away, to dance, sing and visit friends and family. The focus is on the dance, a series of open social dances called "Intertribals," which are mixed with competition in several different dance categories. Most categories are one of the following: men's and women's traditional; men's fancy, women's fancy shawl, grass dance and women's jingle dress. Some are based on traditional dances that were once part of spiritual ceremonies, preparations for war, healing rituals or celebrations of triumph. Years ago, powwows took place only on the reservations, but now they are held everywhere. The growing popularity may be what many have called a "resurgence in Indian identity." The drum is the center of the dance. It is like the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Indians believe that the drum was given to them for their survival to be and feel healthy. The drumstick strikes the drum and the song begins. The men pound the drum and sing at full volume, sounding like wolves in the November is Native American Heritage Month the following people.
