Show Jan. 27, 1994 lights imp rove traffic flow at Hill's West Gate 17 Hilltop Times Sigmical 5 by Jay. Joersz Hilltop Times ' staff , Unless you have been living in a cave lately, or never use the Hill AFB West Gate, you probably have noticed the recent addition of traffic lights. The new additions are receiving mixed reactions from base workers. Some have mentioned that traffic moves much smoother in the morning and around noon with the lunchtime crowds, while others say it is much more congested with the lights both in the morning and after work. Some say it is much harder to maneuver to turning lanes with the lights, both going into the base and leaving the base, because cars have to start and stop more often which keeps the cars in a tighter bunch. One of the gate guards said the lights have definitely helped make the traffic flow much smoother in the morning, but until the northbound Sixth Street traffic is rerouted, he said it will be cluttered in the afternoon with the onslaught of workers getting off work. Frustration with West Gate traffic is nothing new. Just ask base traffic engineer, David Ferguson, who -- said the West Gate is a nightmare to work with. "It is such a compact area to have so many people trying to maneuver around in," he said: He said the main problem areas were the ramps coming off "The number of accidents and injuries is as- -- 5. "UDOT (Utah Department of Transportation) doesn't just put lights in for Hill's convenience or for that matter, it's not going to put any in that will be detrimental either," he said. "They saw a problem with traffic backing up on their' ramps and had to alleviate the problem. The lights have done that." However, Ferguson said the lights have also caused the traffic to be a little slower both in the morning and afternoon. He said further adjustments will be made as needed in the future to help the Ron A.
