Show Jan. 27, 1994 Hilltop Times 5 388th wins two Outstanding Unit Awards by TSgt. Darla Ernst 388th Fighter Wing Public Affairs The 388th Fighter Wing added two streamers to its unit flag by receiving two Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards in a ceremony held Jan. 19. Outstanding! The Outstanding Unit Award is presented to units whose exceptionally meritorious service or outstanding achievements clearly sets the unit above and apart from similar units. Lt. Gen. James L. Jamerson, 12th Air Force Commander from Davis-Montha- n AFB, Ariz., presented the awards to Col. James E. Sandstrom, 388th FW commander, in a ceremony attended by wing members. The first Outstanding Unit Award was presented for the wing's meritorious achievement from August 1990 to March 1991, while deployed for Operations ' Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The 388th was the only tactical fighter wing in the theater to conduct k continuous flying operations. The citation said, "The continual pounding of Iraq's elite Republican Guard by the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing (Provisional) aided in; destroying the enemy's warfighting capability and will to fight and greatly enhanced the Army's abili ty to conduct a ground war." The award also included a valor device that is given to units for combat. The second Outstanding Unit Award was given for the wing's accomplishments from May 1991 to April 1993. During this time, the wing supported and exercise taskings, including many overseas deployments to' Canada, Venezuela and Southwest Asia. Jamerson's comments during the ceremony fo-- Lt. Gen. "When you have a wing like the 388th under your command, you don't worry about getting the job done," he said. "There is no wing in the Air Force working harder and looking better than the 388th." The general also credited the support the 388th receives from the Ogden Air Logistics Center and the local community as important factors in its continuing success. 'My hat is off to the ALC, wing and community," he said. Sandstrom also commented on the teamwork between the three. "The reason we perform so well is that we and our families know we'll be taken care of by the community and the base." Sandstrom referred to the streamers that were added to the flag as symbols of the teamwork, dedication and sacrifice that the men and women of the 388th make each day. "The streamers represent the the times you've smiles, tears, victories, losses when you've lost and cheered picked yourself up louder than anyone when you won," he said. "This is your day; enjoy it!"
