Show Jan. 27, 1994 p...,. ' by Frances Kosakowsky Editor, Hilltop Times "The people at Hill are the best team players I have worked with in all my years in the Air Force, " said Brig. Gen. Charles "Carlos" H. Perez, departing vice commander of Ogden Air Logistics Center. Perez departs Ogden ALC Feb. 10 to assume command of the 377th Air Base Wing at Kirtland AFB, N.M. The general, who has been at Hill since 1989, serving as director of both the Contracting and the Commodities directorates and then as Ogden ALC vice commander, said he has been in a position to observe how well the employees of the center support each other in times of stress and change. "We have gone through so much together: There was IOD (Integrated Organizational Development); then the merging of the two commands (Air Force Logistics Command and Air Force Systems Command to become Air Force Materiel Command); the reduction-in-forc- e process; and then we went through BR AC '93 (Base Closure and Realignment Commission, 1993); and now we are preparing for BRAC '95," Perez said. "We also seriously entered the competition arena and went through the hard work of learning how to execute successful bid efforts," he said. "We not only survived all of that, but look at how successful we were!" he said. "Nine out of 13 attempts won!" anxiety-producin- g Teantbuilding "It's almost like you were on a football team. You work hard and practice hard for the big game and then you win," he said. "In the process, the team has a tendency to unite and pull together. That's what has happened at Hill." He said that in his years with the Air Force, he has moved 14 or 15 times and has seen a lot of different leaders and group behavior styles. What stands out at Hill, he said, is the way the whole base reacts to problems. interest. They see their contribution as an important part of the national defense. 99 Brig. Gen. Charles H. Perez tji' Departing Ogden ALC vice commander " Whenever we at Hill have a problem, our natural tendency is to look at the problem from a corporate point of view to identify solutions that are win-wi- n solutions for everyone. There is always give and take, and the majority of Hill's corporate board decisions are unanimous," Perez said. "It's a real corporate team approach." Perez believes this team spirit springs from the fact that many of the people at Hill have a great sense of common purpose because many of them are v : i- native Utahns for whom Hill is part of their comL , munity and economic stability.
