Show 22 Hilltop Times Nov. 24, 1993 rds AF rewa Workers, Suggestions: reap Hill AFB workers have once again proved that sharing ideas with Uncle Sam can be profitable for both parties, as suggestions rolled in to the Air Force Suggestion Program in the Manpower Office. Thomas J. Oman, an industrial engineering technician, and Robert A. Griess, a sheet metal mechanic in the Aircraft Directorate, noticed that when a . quick release latch assembly was required for the aircraft, the reply to an order was "No part available." As instructed, the mechanic would then order the next higher assembly the entire access door. After some research, Oman and Griess identified latch assemblies that were interchangeable with the assemblies listed in the technical order. The assemblies were already stock listed and readily available at a tremendous savings to the Air Force. As a result the Air Force will save $25,148 and . the two will receive $1,604 to share equally. Rogr Thomas and Michael J. McCoy, instrument mechanics; Larry. J. Sanders, an electrical equipment repairman; and Bennett L. Clow, an instrument mechanic foreman in the Commodities Directorate, noted that a technical order required replacement of all metallic compass transmitter flux valves, with a new plastic flux valve from supply, regardless of their condition. The valves were being replaced during overhaul of the magnetic azimuth detectors from compass transmitters, which are used on all Air Force aircraft except the The suggesters believed the requirement to replace the metallic valves was an unnecessary-wast- e s of and Air Force dollars, as a significant number of the valves were in serviceable condition. They suggested the valves be tested and only the ones that failed be replaced. As a result, the Air Force will save $27,819 and the suggesters will receive $1,535 to be shared equally. Debby G. Grant, production controller; and Kenneth T. McGrath, a sheetmetal worker in the Aircraft Directorate, combined for a suggestion dealing with the walk-i-n blast booth. The suggesters noted that when the blast booth was moved to Bldg. 238, the blast booth floor was extended to accommodate larger aircraft parts. The extension was covered with a steel plate that prevented the blast media from falling into the troughs in the floor and being reclaimed. Sandblast operators expended hours every day sweeping the media into troughs, which stopped blasting and held up production. The suggesters proposed a modification to the floor which extended the troughs all the way to the walls, allowing all media to be reclaimed. As a result, the Air Force will save $6,954 and the suggesters will receive $1,195 to be shared equally.
