Show 18 Hilltop Times April 22, 1993 'Crisis Line' seminar stresses helping others Success, motivation, maturity and inspiration are essential in today's society for people who are striving to grow, develop and change in a positive constructive way. What causes people to stop growing and developing in positive ways? As a concerned society how can we help others through positive enforcement? The answer is simple: people need to change their roles from counselor-negativto people helper-positivsays Charles E. Thurman, an instructor at Park College who teaches courses in psychology. For severe problems, seeking help from a psychotherapist through psychotherapy is an appropriate and efy fective action. But in life, individuals can be "people helpers" by really listening to their friends or coworkers who are in need, and who are reaching out asking for help, Thurman said. The Hill AFB Family Support Center will offer a seminar on how to be a people helper. The seminar, "Crisis Line," will be presented by Thurman, who also holds a master of arts degree in education. The three-da- y workshop will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, and will provide information on human nature, human behavior and communication skills. The information and techniques presented will be used as a foundation for de e, e, day-to-da- veloping effective people helper skills. is required. For more information call Ext. When opportunities present themselves, follow up by taking action. An action taken might be to help the person deal with the less severe problem and refer the more serious ones. Education The second step is the most education. The fact is, most of the education that is required is common knowledge. Most people know how to communicate, solve problems, handle change, and implement and follow up on plans, to some degree. These are "education tasks" for being a people helper. The educational requirement is to continutime-consumi- ously improve these skills and processes. obtaining a skill. Athletes, public speakers and musicians are just a few of the people who know the importance of practice. People helpers need to know the importance of practice too. Asking these questions mentally and finding an answer is a form of practice. Next week's workshop is targeted towards supervisors, Thurman says, but "will be useful to anyone who has ever had to respond to a cry for help.
