On June 20, guest speakers from the community were invited to come and tell the children about how they got started in their jobs and why books and reading were important. The children heard from a pediatrics a police dog handler, a newspaper reporter and a lawyer. Patrolman Bill Jensen, a K-- officer from the Clearfield Police Department, brought his dog, Cassie. Cassie is a German shepherd who is trained to Capt. Kathy Peterson is a at the base Pediatrics Clinic. She told the children that she has more than six years of special training and several years of experience to be qualified for what she does. "I had to learn to take care of all the diseases people get," she said. "This meant I had to read lots of books to know how a person's body works when it's working right and what everything is supposed to look like. Then, I had to learn what things look like when they're not working so well, and how scent glands in their throats that make their sense of smell 300 times more sensitive than humans. Cassie has the same IQ as a person and has been trained to rap-poff rocks just the same as a human mountain climber, and she also knows how to jump out of a helicopter. Jensen told the children he had been in training of some sort his whole life and looks forward to more in the future. "To do my job I've had to do a lot of reading," he said. "It's important that you know a lot about dogs because you need to know how to take care of them and you need to be able to understand what they're trying to tell you. You also need to know what the children what books are in the library that tell about their bodies and recommended that they read some of the books to see if they might like to go into the medical field when they grow up. The newspaper reporter, Frances Kosakowsky from the Hilltop Times, said, "Reading is the main thing I do in my job." She said that being able to read and understand the facts was very important for anyone who writes for a living. People in the community rely on the information in the newspaper and it needs to be as accurate as possible, so you need to be able to read fast and well, she said. The library has books especially selected for anyone who writes for a living: reference books like dictionaries, almanacs and encyclopedias; nurse-practition- er r, nurse-practitione- i 9 smell explosives. She showed ld el ' After this sampling of why literacy is important in a person's career, the children's reading folders were updated and gold stars and pencils with erasers were given to the books on computers, and books on photography. Kosakowsky told the children that a writer needed to know how to use all of them. The lawyer, Capt. Kevin McMurray of the Judge Advocate's Office at Hill, jokingly pounded his gavel on the table and brought his portion of the summer reading program to order. He told the children that his education was long and expensive just like a doctor's, "The most important tools we have to work with are books and pens," he said. "Lawyers depend on what is written in books because it's the record of what was decided in other cases like theirs and what laws applied to them." There's just too much information to try to remember it star-shape- children. There are three more programs in the series scheduled: Saturday, American hobbies and pastime activities; July 18, American flight in history with pilots as guest speakers; and July 25, famous American faces featuring special guests from America's past and fantasy worlds. Ice cream sundaes are planned at the end of this session. Each of the sessions begins at 11 a.m. and lasts approximately one hour.
