J OK, I know there's a lot of you who don't remember the phrase "power to the people." Well, excuse me ... I'm old. But for those who do remember back about 25 years, members of the "love generation" were very demanding; they wanted the portion of the Constitution that talks about a government "of the people" to mean something. They wanted a voice in their government. They wanted to be part of a decision-makinprocess that would determine how well they lived and what kind of world their children would grow up in. I think it's interesting the vision today's dynamic leaders in America are advocating shares the same message. The big rage these days is quality. The quality movement, in a nutshell, is a philosophy that says "good enough" is not. Instead, we must continuously strive to improve processes that result in better service for our customers. X too. I have a young NCO in my section who is proof of this philosophy. Six months ago, he came to me a wreck. He said he had too much work and not enough people or time to do it. He came into my office three weeks ago, but this time he was fidgeting with excitement. He had the same responsibility, the same number of people and the same hours in the day. What was the .difference? It was so simple, he even surprised himself. One morning after a particularly long shift, he pulled his people together and said, "There's got to be a better way. Do any of you have any ideas on how we can do this better?" Two hours later, they had a new duty schedule, a new training plan, three less reports and a lot of happy employees. He empowered them to develop their potential. The pride from seeing their ideas in action and excitement of having a voice in decisions turned on their commitment to their goals and those of the unit. Pride, professionalism and empowerment add up to quality. You increase your autonomy and leadership power when you empower others. Empowerment at all levels will create better relations, innovative customer service and a new energy you never knew existed. Power to the people! Groovy idea. (Story courtesy of Air Combat Command News Service) professionalism. person is not ordered, bossed or directed, but is encouraged, nurtured and stimulated to develop new ideas; where people are excited to be there because they make a difference. Two simple steps will create just such an environment: empower yourself and your rs. Self empowerment is another old notion in a new package. It simply implies or Take charge of yourself. Manage your work and life. Accept responsibility for your behavior. Know that what you do makes a difference. In other words, know yourself and your worth. If you think your service or product is the very best, it can be, it isn't. But how do we instill that attitude of innovation and pride in our unit? Empowerment. According to author John Adams, empowerment is "the creation of an environment in which individuals are encouraged to develop toward their full creative potential."
