All days Why do all union reps get to work There are no union reps straight days? shift and so people on swing shift, on swing who can't come in early because they ride a bus or carpool, aren't able to talk to these Q people. There are approximately 60 stewards designated to perform representational functions for the entire base, and there are not enough stewards to man every shift in each shop. Under provisions of the Local Supplement to the Master Labor Agreement, only union officers and chief or division stewards may be retained on a regular day shift. Branch and floor stewards will follow normal shift rotation. An employee can arrange to meet with a union representative on swing shift by coming in early or by asking the representative or the steward to schedule a suitable time. Any adjustments involving work time will require approval of the appropriate management official. Employees who have questions concerning this issue, may contact the union president, William S. Shoell, at Ext. or Robbed of retirement Please enlighten me regarding the legality of situations that have been forced on civilian employees. I have more than 25 years service with the government and would like to feel I can retire within the next three to five years. We (civilian workers) have been told to plan for our retirement and work toward the day when we can do it. When we hired on with civil service many years ago, part of the agreement was that we could retire in one of two ways: We could get a certain amount of money per month and relinquish the money we paid into the retirement fund, or we could draw out the lump sum that we paid in and take a lesser amount per month. We were not told that maybe we would be, allowed to have the lump sum. It was guaranteed to us as one of the benefits of our employment, and the money we paid in would like to express a very special thank you to all the people who helped and assisted us when our daughter received a severe injury to her finger. First, I'd like to thank Maurine Maley, who happened to be a witness to the accident. She took charge of the situation, calmed my daughter and cut off the blood supply, which I believe helped save her finger. Secondly, Kara Turner, who is an employee at the base exchange, was willing to take my other two children and bring them to the hospital, keep them calm and give them snacks until our friend was available to pick them up. Also, our friends, Barb and Dean Succor, came up to the hospital and got our other children and were willing to take them for the entire day, keep them calm and feed them dinner. SSgt. Katy Gonzales, who works in the emergency room, gave my daughter very special attention and got her calmed down. She gained her confidence so things went smoother. And, we owe a very special thank you to a Maj. (Dr.) Michael DiBenedetto who did reconstructive surgery on my daughter's - ' Maj. Gen. Dale W. Thompson Jr. Ogden AlC commander 50 Morale, Welfare and Recreation Base Restaurants RetirementCompensation (civilian) - - through the years was to be invested and always be there because it was a part of a private retirement program for civilian employees. Now, we find they lied to us. Now, they have decided to put d freeze on lump sums. At the same time, they decided to bribe military members with far fewer years to leave the service when there was absolutely no agreement for something like that when they chose their careers. I feel like I have been robbed to pay off others who have far less years invested than I do. Please don't play word games and talk about different funds set aside for different things. Our money for our retirement program was already there. This doesn't sound legal to me. I kept my part of the agreement; why doesn't the government have to keep their part of the agreement? Even though you have more than 25 years of service, you will not be eligible for voluntary retirement until the year 2001. You must be age 55 with 30 years of service. The only way you could voluntarily retire sooner would be through the approval of an early out retirement authorized due to a major reduction-in-forcThere are no plans for such this year, and three to five years is a little far , down the road for that type of speculation. The retirement program has gone through a number of changes in the last 25 years. When you were hired, however, there was not a program or an agreement guaranteeing a choice between a monthly annuity and a lump sum payment upon retirement. The lump sum provision (Alternative Form of Annuity) was not enacted until June 1986, and was suspended by Congress in October 1990. Thus, the provision was only offered for four e. years. You asked me not to play word games about different funds. I won't; I'll just give you the facts. The military and civilian work force are covered by vastly different laws, programs and retirement plans. I assure you that many military members leaving the Air Force right now would much rather stay on active duty. Many dreams and careers I LCudos finger and was very kind and caring to her. We appreciate the help of all these people and also to Maj. (Dr.) Steven Princiotta who happened to be at the base exchange when the accident happened. He assisted us, went to the hospital with us and stayed with us until Dr. DiBenedetto arrived. It is really nice to know there are people like this around and we just wanted to make sure they know how much we appreciate all their help and support during this time. appreciate your kind words about the efforts of everyone who assisted your daughter during her recent injury. Part of being a community is helping one another in times of need It appears that the Hill community did just that. Maurine Maley, Kara Turner, Barb and Dean Succor, SSgt. Katy Gonzales, Maj. Neither I, nor anyone else, can guarantee there will be no further changes to the retirement programs. But I can assure you no one has robbed you of the money you've paid into the fund. I am confident you'll receive your earned annuity when you are eligible and ready to retire. If you have any further questions about the retirement program, please call the Personnel Directorate's entitlements section Ext. on base Campaigning who an election This year, people being are running for office are purchasing advertising space on the sides of Utah Transit Authority buses. I know of one bus that makes its way through the base every morning and night and then parks where everyone can see the advertisement. Isn't this in violation of some type of restriction on political advertising here on base? After some research, I've concluded there is no prohibition against UTA buses, bear the advertising of political candidates, entering ing onto or parking on Hill. While there is a general prohibition against using government facilities for partisan political activities, based on both the unauthorized use of such facilities and the possible appearance of government endorsement of or partiality being shown any particular political candidate, neither of these elements is present in the case of the UTA buses. The primary purpose for the buses being here is to provide transportation to Hill workers, and the fact that they're simply being parked here would not constitute the unauthorized use of government facilities. As to the appearance of endorsement or partiality, I believe everyone understands the primary purpose of these buses and realizes they are not government affiliated and that by virtue of their function are willing to bear the advertisement of any business or party willing to pay the price. In short, none of the elements that would otherwise prohibit the use of government facilities for political purposes are encountered by the presence of UTA buses on base. . quasi-commerci- al an extremely stressful time for both you and your daughter. During my recent Individual Mobilization Augmentee tour I was billeted in Ogden. While jogging in the evening I discovered a small dog chained to an old truck box which provided no shelter from the elements. I met the owner the next night when I was jogging and he consented to let me provide a dog house. I would like to thank Keith Moulding, 2849th MoraleWelfare, and RecreationServices Squadron, who made a super dog house out of some scrap plywood in a very short period of time. Thanks to him, this dog who previously didn't even have a name, now has some shelter. I feel Moulding deserves a kudos for his kindness in providing a home for Barney. Your kind comments have been passed on to Keith. Thanks for taking the time to recognize a truly professional and dedicated person. Keith's experience, knowledge and expertise are great assets to the wood shop's operations. It's refreshing to receive compliments and to know that his hard work and dedication are appreciated |
