Show 20 Hilltop Times Nov. 9, 1 989 PROFILE OF A WARRIOR . Lawyer finds dra ma by Paul B. Johnson Hilltop Times staff writer may not be as exciting as television's 'Terry or "L.A. Law' but, according to Angelides, chief of legal assistance with the Staff Judge Advocate, being a trial lawyer in real life still has its moments . "It's exciting and dramatic at times' Mr. Angelides said "but you don't get the same everyday excitement as they do on TV except once in a while." Aside from interviewing clients and preparing a variety of legal documents, the majority of Mr. Angelides' cases deal with traffic and shoplifting offenses. Many people don't realize how serious a crime shoplifting actually is, he said, explaining that the offense carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $100,000 fine. "It's a stupid offense," Mr. Angelides said. "(The shoplifters) go and do something dumb and ruin their lives." Mr. Angelides is a retired Air Force lieutenant Dt . . is? colonel, and served active duty for 24 years. His career began as an internal auditor with the Air Force, where he served for six years before leaving temporarily to attend law school. Soon he became an assistant district attorney in New York's Bronx County. He handled all types of cases: homicide, drug, racketeering. Although he found the work interesting, it couldn't compensate for the locale. As he said, "It was a terrible place to live." Mr. Angelides rejoined the Air Force in 1969 and came to Hill in 1982, where he's found that the base security forces and the Office of Special Investigations, with whom he also works, make his job easier. "With good security police investigations, you're not faced with, surprises like you are in Terry Mason " he said. Looking back on his career, Mr. Angelides said, "It's been a good experience. I don't regret it at all. You never get rich in this business, but, what the heck, there's a lot of things more important than that." Sandwiches Salads It's not "L.A.
