Show FAREWELL by Donna Brown staff Hilltop Times i writer Few people know more about the history of Hill AFB than Charles G. Hibbard. Dr. Hibbard retired from his position as chief of the Ogden Air Logistics Center Office of History, Nov. 3. Hill AFB is approaching its 50th anniversary in January. Dr. Hibbard has been a part of the military and Hill AFB for many of those years, "Fifty years is a significant amount of time," he said. "The base has clearly had a strong influence on national defense. It's had a very significant impact on Utah by employing people over the years and helping to bring industry here." He emphasized Hill's contribution to defense and to the rise)f industry here. Dr. Hibbard said he feels that had it not been for Hill AFB, much of Utah's industry would not have locat- 1 66 Fifty years is a significant amount of time. Three years later he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and became an air traffic controller stationed at :r:. Hill..: - 99 Hilltop Times 19 ; During his Air Force military career, Dr. Hibbard served in Korea, the Azores, England and Vietnam. He retired from the Air Force as a chief master sergeant in 1970. Following his retirement from the service, he continued his education by completing his doctorate in history at the University of Utah in 1981. Dr. Hibbard began his federal government civilian service as historian of the 27th Tactical Fighter Wing, Cannon AFB, N.M., in 1982. He left there in 1984 for an assignment at Hickam AFB, Hawaii.
