Show NEWS .July 21, 1989 Hilltop Times 3 s 41 DOD hazardous WASHINGTON (AFNS)-Four-t- een Air Force bases, an Air National Guard base and an Air Force plant are named as proposed additions to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund National Priorities List. The EPA is proposing 52 sites be added to list. Of these, 41 belong to the Department of Defense. William K. Reilly, EPA administrator, announced the proposed additions on July 13. "This is another step that makes good on the president's pledge to elevate the priority of federal facility services pay for site "cleanups out of ' ' waste sites added cleanups," said Mr. Reilly. . The NPL lists hazardous waste sites potentially posing the greatest long-terthreat to health and the environment. Sites are identified and ranked according to threats to people through actual or potential contamination of groundwater, surface water or air. The primary purpose of the list is to guide the EPA and the states in determining which hazardous waste sites need further investigation for possible I cleanup. Federal agencies and the military m their own budgets. The bases named by the EPA are: Edwards AFB, Calif. Eielson AFB, Alaska Elmendorf AFB, Alaska F.E . Warren AFB, Wyo. George AFB, Calif. Homestead AFB, Fla. Loring AFB, Maine Luke AFB, Ariz. March AFB, Calif. Mountain Home AFB, Idaho Otis Air. National Guard Base, Plattsburgh AFB, N.Y. Travis AFB, Calif. Williams AFB, Ariz. The Air Force plant is located in Waterton, Colo.. In addition to the 15 bases named, the EPA is proposing expanding an Air Force site already listed. The site on Mather AFB, Calif., has been on the final list since July 1987. The EPA says additional sites on the base are responsible for contaminating an underground drinking water supply and may be responsible e for some contamination.
