That's one thing Gary Cragun didn't bargain for when he asked for copies of a slide presentation more than 11 years ago. He hoped for prompt service, but didn't get it. A package of slides were mailed from Keesler AFB, Miss., more than a decade ago, but its untimely arrival would be delayed until October 1988 almost 11 years late. Mr. Cragun, chief of user support system, in the Directorate of Communications-Compute- r Systems, attended a Top Down Design structured programming class at Keesler Oct. 1977, and as a result asked to receive color slides that would help him develop and teach a similar class at Hill AFB. The class helped develop 2-1- 4, representative to become familiar with the overview, then return and teach classes here," Mr. Cragun said. "It was an excellent course; unfortunately, the slides made quite a bit of difference in the presentation. The visual effects created by the slides would have helped the class at Hill as well." When mail service failed to produce the package that had been sent, it was time for Mr. Cragun to rely on ingenuity and creativity. He had to conceive the same topic, but this time use overhead viewgraphs, something he had hoped to avoid. "That's exactly why I wanted the course instructor to send a copy of the slides. They were excellent," Mr. Cragun said. "I didn't receive them when I thought I should, so I called the instructor. He said they had been sent. U.S. Air Force Photo by Ralph C. Jensen Late preview Gary Cragun looks at a slide he needed more than a decade ago. When time for the class rolled around, I still didn't have the slides. "The class was successful, but I think it would have been better with the slides," he said. A few months later (May 1978), he departed the user support center for another job with the Air Force Audit US Hilltop Times Agency, not thinking about the missing slides. Nine years later (June 1987), Mr. Cragun returned to the same office, now called the information services division. "On Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1988, I returned to work to find a brown package in my in basket," Mr. Cragun said. "I wondered who would be sending something to me from Keesler. "I couldn't figure out what would be wrapped in brown paper and be 4 x 8 x 2 inches," Mr. Cragun said. "I turned it over to make sure it was for me. I didn't notice the address other than my name." The package had one end open a little and all I could see were slides. After I opened the package, I held some of the slides to the light. "I couldn't believe my eyes. They looked so familiar, then I saw Top Down Design, I broke out laughing," he said. He grabbed the wrapper and as unbelievable as it might have seemed, it was postmarked Nov. 1, 1977. "I still couldn't believe it. All I could think of was where they might have been all this time," Mr. Cragun said. "I guess I'll never know what happened. The package did have a special, stamp. Back then it cost fourth-clas- s 54 cents, not bad for 11 years work."
