Jensen Ogden ALC Public Affairs Office A, intense evaluation at the Hill AFB Precision two-wee- k Measure- ment Equipment Laboratory has turned up some very pleasant results. Laboratory equipment passed with flying colors. In fact, evaluations were so good that 29 of the 30 organic tests administered revealed an excellent rating. Only one piece of equipment was off kilter and it was so slight that it wouldn't normally be noticed. The evaluation would determine whether Hill was meeting set quality guidelines in maintaining weapon systems accuracy. Hill is the only air logistics center to have a PMEL branch that must undergo the evaluation. However, they are only one of nearly 190 other military installations that receive the inspection every other year. According to CMSgt. Charles May, chief of the certification office at Newark AFB, Ohio, Hill meets the appraisal guidelines and has been issued another two-yecertificate. "Without certification we would literally have to shutdown the base," Chief May said. "The laboratory at Hill, as well as every other Air Foce installation, must maintain measurements through the Air Force Metrology and Calibration Program. It is administered by the Aerospace Guidance and Metrology Center at Newark. Rare, if ever, has Hill had any ar iy4 , - CN : - U.S. Air Force Photo by Ralph C. The Air Force program is designed to ensure that the accura cy of the weapons systems be maintained throughout the system or equipment life cycle, according to J ohn Berry, chief of the PMEL branch. Certification allows Hill workers to continue gauging all measurement equipment used at many locations on base. Hill's PMEL branch has a unique mission. They are responsible for repair, calibration and certification of all measurement equipment used on base. "We are making sure that measurement equipment we use today is just as good as the day it was purchased," Mr. Berry said. "It is not an easy job to maintain all the equipment on base. There are 99 different buildings that have some type of measurement device. We ensure that they are all accurate. "We can't sell a product off a test station if it hasn't been certified. We're testing for quality and Hill has an exceptional quality record," he said. The Hill office has a charter which they must uphold. Most apparent are the Air Force's sophisticated aircraft and missile systems. They must maintain detailed and minute measurements. According to Mr. Berry, it is done to ensure the systems will function properly. Perhaps most questioned are some of the Air Force's missile systems. According to Mr. Berry, the missiles are extremely accurate. They have first-han- d knowledge because that is a specific part of their charter. "Slight variations can render equipment ineffective or even dangerous. That's why we uphold our charter guidelines," Mr. Berry said. "By contrast, we check the newborn baby scales at the hospital and C-- 5 Galaxy wing kits. There is no room for tolerance. We insist on that. Perhaps that is why we are able to maintain our high quality standards and continue getting recertified."
