The sole Affairs Office 'afety stands on the forefront of technolo gy at Hill AFB and saving money often goes d with key advancements. A group of six Hill individuals saw a need to put a glove on the hand of advancement by modifying an already existing explosive safety band that could be used to complete their duties in the liquid fuels rocket engine section of the gineering planning branch of the missile and aircraft systems division in the Directorate of Lynn Stocks hand-in-han- Directorate of Maintenance 99 . ""' time a detonator was cut, it had to be throw away; the severed wires were too short to be spliced and reused. But, with the safety band, it can be removed, wires separated and once the programmed depot maintenance is completed, returned in unqualified working order. Keeping the detonator in its original package results in a projected annual savings of more than $200,000. e installation. No"The detonator is a body really liked too much to go in and cut that ordnance before," said Mr. Stocks. "Now it's not that big of a deal, plus it saves us about an hour in working time. Because of the safety band we feel safer about the job. You can't put a cost savings on safety in this line of work." Maintenance. Lynn Stocks, a liquid fuels rocket engine mechanic, was one of those who saw the need for additional safety methods and was part of the modification team that redesigned the safety band that would fit on the fourth stage of the Minuteman III weapons system. "We're working with about 100 rocket motors each year and we have to pull the ordnance on each motor," said Mr. Stocks. "The sole purpose of the explosive safety band is to protect personnel. The band fits around the rocket motor and is packed with styrofoam for protection should the motor explode." The detonator and charge fits around the circumference of the motor and an explosion would create havoc in the protected maintenance environment. "The nice thing about the safety band is in the fact it saves time in removing the detonator," said Richard Aggen, quality assurance specialist in the Directorate of Maintenance. "The other nice thing is the money savings." According to Mr. Aggen, in the past, every "Willi ' : ( una.' ,'xr fr i ' , . iS0 f hi -- i one-tim- The shields are not new, but have only been in use at Hill the past year. The safety equipment was obtained from Bell Aerospace, N.Y., who had been using them when the fourth stage was under contract some 20 years ago. "This is certainly a type of operation because it is done at Hill and nowhere else," said Mr. Aggen. "It has made a big difference in the way this stage of the motor is handled. The safety factor is hard to measure, but I know it is much safer because of the modified safety seal." one-and-on- ly U.S. Air Force Photo by Ralph C.
