Show HILL TOP TIMES Friday. July 12, 1985 Mew wsaf eir. il'irecsill'innjsirDil" A relatively new water treatment method has found its way to the taps here. The process, which utilizes magnetic fields to treat hard water, has been in the experimental phase here for about one year by the Chemical Laboratory Branch, according to its supervisor, Hal Gorringe. "We don't know exactly why it works, but the main thing is that it makes water behave like soft water. There's no hard water buildup on the pipes and it helps eliminate algae and fungus," he said. The process, called magnetic water conditioning,, has been used for nearly 35 years in Europe and the Soviet Union. It requires little more than placing magnets outside the pipes which, explained Mr. udintfy btroBDch keeps wotfcfo odd By p cob e inn s II John Kempinger Directorate of Maintenance inmeftlhodl on ftp Ihieire If magnetic water conditioning works as efficiently as its critics claim, Mr. Gorringe said it has several advantages over traditional treating methods. "It really cuts down on costs. Magnets are inexpensive and don't require any maintenance. It's far better than using hard water, especially since corrosion from the minerals costs the federal government billions annually," he said. Mr. Gorringe doesn't know how long the process will be in the experimental phase. Part of their work, however, is to conduct studies on its efficiency in comparison to cost. "Our job here is to test if it works as well as the claims. If it does, we'll recommend a change," he Gorringe, experiments show contribute electrons to ions in the water. The resultant change in crystal- line structure makes the water act like soft water without adding compounds used in more traditional methods. The Chemical Laboratory Branch is currently conducting about 20 experiments. These include placing the magnets outside the pipes in work and residential areas. For example, explained Mr. Gorringe, the magnetically treated water is used in equipment, such as in a conductor, which requires water with a low mineral content. In housing areas, residents have been using the treated water for quenching their thirsts. high-electric- al concluded. In addition to work here, the specialists maintain an evaluation of work done at the strategic missile wings by members of the project "Rivet MILE." Branch chief John F. Kempinger said his crew strives to have the right data and tools available at the right time. "This has allowed for more productivity and gives the pride in workmanship necessary for producing quality products that work the first time," he concluded. "Defect Prevention" is the password for personnel under the guidance of Col. Dorral J. Calvert, division chief, Missile and Aircraft Systems Qual- ity Branch. Using a combined total of 348 years experience, the division branch keeps a watchful eye for potential problems with the national missile systems. Current duties include using the latest quality assurance techniques for the Minuteman, Maverick, Cruise and SRAM missiles, and developing methods to use for the next generation missiles.
