Show HILL TOP TIMES Fridoy, Awgutt 24, 1984 e d i to ri as Illusion of beauty: A By SSgt. Mel Wilson Bergstrom AFB. Texas The white horse carried the illusion of beauty as he circled around the playing children. He has played his game often so he patiently waits until he is noticed. As he lands, the children are so awed by his grace and seeming beauty they don't notice the changing of the grass under his silver hooves. He has a sickly, sweet smile and some of them notice his yellowed teeth and blood-re- d eyes. Some are frightened and, recalling nearly forgotten warnings from their parents, run away. But others are drawn by his quiet, melodious voice and listen to his promises. He promises a world where everything is beautiful and all the people are happy. He carefully avoids the unspoken "sometimes" that hangs in the air. "Come and ride on me," he says, "and 111 show you where dreams are made. I can take you where music is solid and light is a living thing." His promises continue until they become a dull drone in his ears. He has recited them often. Falling child hops silent, he waits until one on his back. oft-repeat- now-enchant- ed ed " horse of a different color He is in the air so quickly the child sucks in his breath and hugs the horse's mane tightly. Suddenly, he is there. The child feels the music striking his ears as gently as a fall breeze, and talks to the bright, swirling clouds of colors. He reaches out to touch a very striking blue and the horse suddenly goes into a dive. With an abrupt snap, he sends the child crashing to the ground. He has done this many times as a test to find regular riders. Some of these riders remember the pain and never ride again. However, others remember only the swirls of color and the music's gentle caress and continue to ride until it all ends with one final crash. The child gets up. The horse smiles in anticipation. After a long silence, the child cries for his parents and runs home, vowing never to ride again. The horse's smile lessens but does not disappear. He has heard such vows often and upon returning found the rider begging for another ride. The other children, seeing their playmate's reaction, quickly depart. The horse soars into the heights searching for other victims. He can do no more here today. The horse is drugs. The child could be yours! . (AFNS) Child's prayer seeks help for dad By SSgt. John T. Costell 313th Air Division, Jr. Kadena AB, Japan A child explained to me, as best as she could, about what it was like to live with an alcoholic parent. She was a student in my Sunday School class. I asked each student in the class to ask God for something. Her prayer begins: "Dear God, thanks for life. Help me to clean my room and play with my brother and sister without fighting. Help me do my chores without whining, but most of all, God, make my daddy stop coming home drunk and yelling." child speaking from It amazed me. A the heart. Reaching out to the only power she knows of who can help her daddy. I wanted to tell her that her daddy will only stop when he recognizes his problem. Tears came to my eyes after reading her prayer. "I can stop," "I know my limit," Tve been drinking for years and I haven't hurt anyone" are some familiar phrases used by social drinkers. But what about those tennis shoes little Jimmy needed for gym at school? Remember what you told him? "Sorry, son, but Tve other things to do and get first. I'm sure your old shoes will last a bit longer. Maybe next payday we can get you some." But did you get your alcohol that week? Sure you did, and you used little Jimmy's tennis shoes money. Or how about the time your daughter was playing with her friends in the yard? You drove up, stumbled from your car and finally reached the door. Remember that? Probably not if you were drunk, but seven-year-o- ld your daughter sure does. Alcoholism affects not just the individual who drinks, but also family, and friends.
